Roosevelt Hotel NYC
This hotel has a Travelzoo price of $159 a night through March. We are thinking of taking our teenage sons to NY for Presidents Day weekend. How is it and is this a decent price? We would get 2 rooms.

Why not try the NOVOTEL in Times Square? You can check out more info about them and more deals on my blog at

The Roosevelt is a traditional, older-style hotel in a good location. Worth it is you get a good price (not sure what they look like for that weekend - check out hotwire and travelzoo).
I would much prefer this location to anything in Times Square - but maybe that's because I'm a local. |
$159 is a great price for a Manhattan hotel. The Roosevelt is an older property. Well maintained in a convenient midtown Manhattan location. You would pay double to be at the Hampton, Courtyard and maybe even Days Inn. I think it's a great value. I would go for it.

My husband and I stayed at the Roosevelt last December and really enjoyed it. It was in a great location. Times Square was just a few minutes away. I think we paid $199 last year on travelzoo and we thought that was a great price. I would book it now.

Thanks for your help. I will book it now.

Read reviews on tripadvisor which are mixed. The location is great but the hotel is old and has a wide range of rooms. Experiences seem to depend on what room you get. I think there may be better options on Travelzoo nearer your trip. Maybe if you can book it as cancelable you might wait and see what other offers come up.

On rereading your post and seeing you're talking about 2 rooms, no this is not a good price imo. Tax will add 15% to the room rate so you're paying almost $400/night to stay in a mediocre hotel. If you want 2 rooms, I suggest you keep looking (check quikbook.com and kayak.com) and/or try bidding on Priceline for a 4* hotel for 2 rooms. I see the Courtyard Times Square South has a prepay/non-cancelable rate of $164/night plus tax for either a king room or 2 doubles and I think is a much nicer option, especially with teens. It's not right in TS but close enough.
If you don't mind all being in one room/suite, the Affinia.com hotels have some 1 bedroom suites with 2 beds in the bedroom and a sofabed in the living room that should be cheaper and you'd have a kitchen and a separate sitting area. |
I don't agree with mclaurie's description of the Roosevelt Hotel as "mediocre." It's better than that. Further, it underwent a major renovation program a year or two ago.
I would lean more towards the first-hand comments posted here rather than the questionable and historically unreliable reviews on tripadvisor. |
The reviews on tripadvisor are first hand, Howard, and I don't think many people would argue with the fact that for a mere $5/night more, the Hampton Inn Times Square is a better, newer hotel for a trip with teens than the Roosevelt.

Sorry, I meant the Courtyard TS.

I know the tripadviser reviews are "first hand." I still call a lot of them "suspect"!
I can't speak for recent first-hand experiences at either hotel....can you? This I do know, however: 1. Having stayed there many times in the past, I would not call the Roosevelt mediocre, especially considering its recent multi-million-dollar renovation. 2. More than a few Fodorites have stayed at the Roosevelt since the renovations and have been quite pleased with the experiences. 3. I'll agree that the Hampton Inn is a new facility. Better? Let's hear it from people who've stayed at both! |
