Romantic Winter Getaway? Northeast or Mid-Atlantic

Here's the scenario. My wife is pregnant and we're looking for a final getaway before she is completely unable to travel. She isn't supposed to fly after the 1st week in January so our 1st choice of a long weekend in the Caribbean is out. Here's what we're looking for:

-Mid January through February
-A 350 mile or less radius from the NYC area
-$200/night lodging limit, we're open to B&Bs or hotels
-no big cities, we live in the New York area and need a break from the frantic pace.
-prefer in or near a charming small town with restaurants and art galleries in walking distance

I'm tentatively looking at Stowe, VT or Charlottesville, VA but perhaps there are other places I don't know about.

Thanks!

I would have to offer Williamsburg,VA.That time of year, you can make last minute reservations at decent prices. The transportation system can minimize waking. Rainy, cold days are lousy but that's the same everywhere.

Here is one you never would have even heard of but from what you describe, it may be just what you are looking for. Info is from the website.

Berkeley Springs is a small place with a mighty appetite for the good life. Massage therapists outnumber lawyers three to one, and last year AmericanStyle readers rated the town #12 among the nation’s Top 25 Arts Cities.

Berkeley Springs State Park is more than a town square, it’s a mineral spa that has operated since 1784 — and just one of several purveyors of spa services in town. What more could you want? How about great food and lodging, antiques, handcrafts, the Ice House arts center and the vintage Star Theatre?

Berkeley Springs is an historic spa and art-filled town nestled in the West Virginia mountains only 90 minutes from the Washington/Baltimore metro area. It boasts warm mineral springs, world class dining, dozens of unique shops, five full-service spas and more than 100 lodging choices from elegant B&B's and historic inns to cabins and resorts. Golf, hiking and swimming share the schedule with year 'round festivals, live music and theater.

Another place in the same county as Berkeley Springs is Shepherdstown. Info from the websites (describes the area better than I can):

Every July, theater lovers flock to tiny Shepherdstown for the Contemporary American Theater Festival. They also find a charming main street chock-full of shops and good restaurants. Like all Eastern Panhandle towns, this one harbors history — including a replica of the James Rumsey steamboat that plied the Potomac two decades before Fulton’s boat chugged up the Hudson. The town is also home to the Bavarian Inn, a stone and half-timbered German lodge and restaurant overlooking the Potomac River.

Our community is very unique in representation. We make up the artist, the musicians, the professors, the students, and the businessmen and women in Shepherdstown.

Visit our downtown shops for jewelry, potpourri, candles, art, coffee and more. Also learn more about our fresh veggies at The Farmers Market.

Our history represents some of West Virginia's most interesting and finest culture. Learn more about the Civil War in Shepherdstown as well as the age of the oldest town in WV.

Harpers Ferry’s is not far from Shepherdstown but not sure if it is even open during the winter.

In roughly increasing order of distance from NYC, can't guarantee all the hotels are within the range, you might find them to be in Jan/Feb esp if you avoid President's Weekend and Valentine's day, etc.:

1. Mohonk Mountain House, in New Paltz New York, about 90 minutes from NYC. Check out their website at Mohonk.com. While it is not in a town per se, there are several towns in the area with art galleries and antiques.

2. New Hope, Pennsylvania area and across the Delaware River into Lambertville New Jersey. Cannot recco hotels, but run a search here or on-line or get a guidebook, the area is very popular, esp in the fall.

3. The Brandywine area on the border of Pennsylvania and Delaware is a lovely area of the country. There are Longwood Gardens if you like gardens, and the Winterthur Museum if you are interested in colonial American and other antiques. The area around the river is charming as well. Take a look at http://www.longwoodgardens.org and http://www.winterthur.org. Cannot speak with confidence about the art galleries, but I would guess you might find a few in the area. An inn to consider would be Inn at Montchanin Village in the Brandywine, Delaware area about 30 minutes south of Philadelphia. Go to http://www.montchanin.com or slh.com

4. St Michaels area on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I believe you will still find things open in Jan and Feb, it is pretty much a year-round place at this point I think, but you might want to confirm this with others, but if shops are open, there are numerous galleries and antique shops. Otherwise, I would say go to the Annapolis Maryland area where you would find things open for sure in that time period. In St Michaels, take a look at the Inn at Perry Cabin at www.perrycabin.com, a wonderful hotel.

5. Cooperstown New York. The town has a lot of antique and art galleries and there is of course the Baseball Hall of Fame. Would be cross-country skiing, etc in winter. The place to stay is the Otesaga Resort Hotel, take a look at http://www.otesaga.com.

For our final getaway (I was 7 mo's pregnant), we went to Lake Placid. We stayed at the Mirror Lake Inn which may be out of your price range in January, but was very charming. There is also a Hilton, and several smaller inns and B&B's. The town is quaint, with lots of restaurant choices and small shops.

I would also suggest Manchester, VT.
