Romantic ideas in DC
I am going to be in DC one day/night with my sweetheart and wanted some ideas of something romantic to do. I have heard the Lincoln Memorial is always nice. We are staying at the Hyatt by the Capital. ANYTHING would be helpful at this point. Thanks!

well, this is obviously personal opinion but I suppose the Lincoln Memorial is a nice constructed monument and statue but would never in a million years call it romantic or any other memorial, either. Washington DC has nice memorials in terms of landscaping and design, but I've never understood the avg. person's attraction to viewing these buildings and statues, I just think they're boring (except for the Vietnam memorial). How about going to a live Senate session or Congressional committee hearing on transportation funding or something, that's pretty romantic. (ha, ha, ha, just my warped sense of humor) Okay, I'll tell you my best suggestion which is that gardens are fairly romantic -- go to Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown, they have about 10 acres of beautiful gardens you can stroll around (and now they should be nicely in bloom) plus there is a nice small pre-Columbian art museum there (go or not depending on your wishes) and it's got a good location just on northern edge of Georgetown so afterwards you can just meander down Wisconsin avenue in Georgetown, window-shopping, browsing, stopped in at attractive cafes, etc. If you walk enough, you will end up at the bottom of Wisconsin at this rather upscale Georgetown shopping mall, Georgetown Park, good for expensive shopping and also at that location is Washington Harbour -- a condo/office/restaurant complex. There are several restaurants in there that have great outdoor dinining on terraces with a river view, very popular and a good, romantic way to end your day -- I'd suggest Sequoia in there as the best bet. There's also Riverside Grill and Tony & Joe's Seafood. That will probably be a full day, if not, there is nightlife in Georgetown; Blues Alley at 1073 Wisconsin Ave is a great venue, but an event in itself and not cheap. If you don't want to dine at Wash. Harbour, several other great restaurants in Georgetown are Arditi at 3299 M St (great bargain Indian food), Bistro Francais at 3124 M St (mod-priced good French bistro fare, another plus of this place is it's open very late at night) or a very good and popular place is Cafe Milano on Prospect St (great Italian food, celebrities go here but prices are not too bad, good bar). Now that is a perfect romantic day -- Dumbarton Oaks gardens, walk through Georgetown, dinner at Cafe Milano or Washington Harbour. (I'm so good at planning these things, too bad my boyfriends are never as imaginative.)

I prefer the Lincoln Memorial at sunrise. The color isn't as nice, but you will be about the only ones there.

It is a little out of the way, but think about the Washington Sailing Marina, near National (excuse me, Reagan) airport off the Parkway on the way to Alexandria. They have a great Sunday brunch there where you can sit outside on the deck and watch the boats in the harbor. If it is a beautiful day, it is a real hidden treasure. Very relaxing way to spend an afternoon. I would gather they serve dinner too, but don't know. I also have no idea how good it would be, but the brunch is standard brunch fare. You might want to call and see what they offer. I would think it would be a great place to have a couple drinks before heading to dinner. It is much quieter and, therefore, romantic, than Georgetown Harbor, which is a zoo on pretty days.

Other hidden treasures include the outdoor bar/restaurant at the top of the Washington Hotel. It is right near the Mall and the WHite House. Take the elevator to the top and there is a covered deck looking out over the skyline. A great place to cool your heels and relax after a day at the museums.

Not hidden, but very romantic is the Impressionist Room at the National Gallery.

Rent bikes and ride along the river to Mount Vernon. There is a great (flat) trail that is easy beautiful riding. Or just ride to Old Town Alexandria and wander around some. The trail also goes by the sailing marina.

I second Bistro Francais in Georgetown. It was a favorite spot when I lived there. Ummmmm.
Hmmm. That's all I can think of

Stacy:
Why don't you send an email to the White House and ask President Clinton. He's the guy who seems to know all about romance in Washington, D.C.

Filomena's in Goergetown for romantic Italian....
any of the monuments by moonlight.

go to the back of the capitol at sunrise and watch the sun set over the mall.
