One word: "strategery"

Tess Jun 26th, 2004 06:40 AM

emd, I just read an article that said (and I quote), "The proper usage of hyphens is currently in a state of flux." Meaning, I suppose, that no one knows what's correct and incorrect since instant messaging, etc. is changing the way we write.

I really need to find more exciting reading material...

Verrry funny, gyppielou :)

I know some people who cannot stand to see a curtain not hanging perfectly straight, the silverware in a restaurant not perfectly set up by the dish, so it is only natural that there will be some people who cannot ignore a / dash ... or ---- and God Forbid !!!
A misspelled word :)
But that is what WE are for, to keep them on their toes!!
And searching for their meds :D

Aieeeee!

Are you trying to give me a heart attack, or what????

I have a journalism degree, and my Dad is an English PhD who was an editor for many years.

I grew up being corrected in front of my friends ("It's Susan and me, not Susan and I"), at the dinner table, on vacation, etc., etc.

In fact, I am now 42 years old, and my Dad still corrects me automatically on the phone from 440 miles away. I'm always agonizing over the subjunctive case and looking around; afraid that he is going to jump out from behind a tree shaking his finger at me.

I try not to go nutso on here because - in my view - (sorry emd) this is a very informal forum, and no one should be hesitant to post for worrying about someone correcting their grammar or spelling.

I try not to jump in and criticize people's grammar, punctuation or spelling because we ALL make errors.

BUT, (I know, you're not supposed to start sentences with but - someone PLEASE stop me!!!) if someone jumps on another poster for spelling or grammar or punctuation, and I think they're wrong, then I will usually jump into the fray. Ergo the "extrapolate" controversy.

I am now on the comma in "Eats, Shoots and Leaves." I've enjoyed the book and recommend it to everyone.

Guess who got a copy for Father's Day? (He said "she made a glaring error right off the bat."? Sigh. ;)

Diana, I was editor of my school paper, but on this Board, I am L-A-Z-Y. And I've decided that I like ............... and ----------- and ********* to add a little spice to my replies so I DON'T CARE IF IT'S PROPER usage. And if it keeps the "police" awake, that's a GOOD THING!:-d They'd have nothing to think about without people like me messing things up...:-)

And I love these;;);;);;)...........:-d (Just had to throw those in!)

Diana, your Dad sounds very cool!
