Rogue river lodges
Our nephews and mother-in-law are coming into town and we are thinking of doing the jet boat trip up the Rogue to one of the lodges. I have read is a previous post the Paradise Lodge being recommended, however there are a number of other lodges, including the half Moon Bar Lodge, Clay Hill, Black Bear, to name a few. I was hoping someone could help us decide which one to go to for a night.
My second question refers to where to pick up the jet boat. From what I have read, you can get it at Gold Beach or Foster Bar. My thought was to drive to Foster Bar and pick it up there as the drive from Coos Bay should be amazing. Any suggestions or comments would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! |
We have stayed at Paradise Lodge on our last night after rafting through the Wild & Scenic part of the Rogue. It is probably the largest of the lodges you named. Rustic but nice. Many of the jetboats do stop there for lunch, which I guess can make it crowded, but it was a pretty large area. The best part is you can watch the rafters come off of Blossom Bar, one of the most dangerous spots on the Rogue.
Whether you pick up in Gold Beach or Foster Bar just depends on how much time you want to spend on the boat. You can always drive in a car, but can't always go up the river on a jetboat. One word of warning, depending on how old the nephews are, watching all the rafters come down the river as you go up, will make them want to do the rafting on their next trip!!! |
There is also the Tu Tu Tun Lodge where you can arrange for the jet boat to pick you up - havent stayed there but believe its one of the more upscale of the lodges and is quite close to Gold Beach.
I too have stayed at Paradise Lodge- rustic as stated before but enjoyed stay( especially after hiking in ) . I think they turn the lights out at 10PM. We hiked in on the Rogue River Trail and took the jet boat out. Have also done the whole day trip on the jet boat and we picked that up in Gold Beach- and stopped at one of the lodges for lunch- I dont remember the name of that lodge but I do know it looked even more rustic than Paradise - |
Yes, I agree with Sunbum, TuTuTun Lodge is very nice. We have stayed there a couple of times. It is beautiful, not as rustic as the other places you mentioned. The hosts are wonderful, the food delicious, and the views of the river gorgeous! The jetboat can pick you up right at the dock. I didn't mention it earlier as I thought you wanted to boat into your accomodations (which is pretty cool!) TuTuTun is only about 7 miles up the river.
You can take the jetboat ride from there, they usually stop at lunch at Paradise Lodge or one of the other lodges and will drop you off again at TuTuTun. It just depends on what kind of accomodations (and costs) you are looking for. |
Thank you all for your responses. I have been looking into it more and as wonderful as it sounds, I am deterred by the cost. For 5 adults, with a jet boat in one day over night and jetboat out, it is going to coast over $1000 - for one night! So my question is, is it really worth it? We are prepared to do it if it is an adventure that we just won't find elsewhere, but I just keep thinking that for half the cost we could go to Newport or something like that.
Any thoughts? |
But thats only $200/person and that includes some meals I am sure- seems to
me when we stayed at Paradise our meals were included - although that was a couple of years ago so could have changed. and of course you could always just do the jet boat ride and not stay overnight at one of the lodges . I think its more fun than anything you will find to do in Newport - |
I love the jet boats - we have done it twice and loved it. I love the idea of staying at one of the lodges but probably wouldn't just because of the cost. The boat is the same whether you stay the night or not and I could stay in a cheaper lodge some other place another time.
Sorry I can't really answer your question on which lodge as we haven't stayed in any but I think you would have just as much fun just on the boat. If I were to choose one I think one of them without electricity would be fun - more rustic and 'old fashioned'. I can't wait until our little guy is a little older - he will love it! Sara |
Thought that I would just update this post!
This past weekend we went to Paradise Lodge. We picked up a jet boat (Jerry's) at Foster Bar. We did this because we didn't think that our 11 month old would tolerate the longer trip. This turned out to be a very wise choice as he was quite scared by the noise and the water antics that take place in the boat between the rafters and the boat. Lots of fun for older kids, but not sure that it was really appropriate for an infant. When I called Jerry's and asked if the trip was okay for an infant, they said it would be fine without any reference to the water play, which I was a little annoyed at. If you have an infant, I would recommend getting picked up at Foster Bar by the Paradise Lodge boat, an option I didn't know about. Also Paradise Lodge and Half Moon Bar Lodge are owned by the same people so you can get dropped off there as well. Paradise Lodge is directly above the River which was just wonderful. The setting is perfect with lots of places to explore, swim and hike (lodge is right on the Rogue River trail and there are additional trails on the property). Saw two bears, a river otter, bald eagle, very cool! The food was excellent, most of it coming from the gardens or cattle kept right on the Lodge property. The gardens are open for exploration. The accomodations were rustic which was fine. The bathroom had very hot water and good water pressure. The bed linens were clean. My only complaint was the cleanliness of the carpet and under the beds, not so clean! This was of particular importance to me with a crawling infant.
