Rodeos shows in Texas

Hello,

I will be travelling in Texas on oct 12-16 with a rented car.

I want to "feel" the texas experience and was thinking to be in San antonio and around (Texas hill country and small towns).

I really want to see a Texas Rodeo.

1. Is there any good Rodeos shows around San antonio-Austin in oct 12-16?

2. I understand that Stockyards Rodeo is recommended. If I start my trip in Fort Worth it will be less one day in San antonio area and more driving times, Is that rodeo worth it?

Thank you,

Amit

A rodeo is a rodeo to me. Do you want to do that extra driving? That is what you really need to consider. I'd rather spend the time in San Antonio but I've been to a lot of rodeos.

Rodeo schedule says Athens prca is October 12-14. Another option but I think it's a bit further away, maybe a half hour so negligible though.

Either way, 4-5 hours is what I'd consider a fairly easy drive, if you're used to distance driving. But something to consider is that I'm assuming you will need a hotel near the rodeo- and those may already be booked up or too expensive. So see if you can even get lodging first on those dates.

I've lived in Texas for 34 years and have never seen a rodeo. That said, here's a schedule of events.

There's nothing in Central Texas for your dates, so FW may be your best bet.

I've lived in Texas for 39 years and have seen one rodeo at Fort Worth. The Mutton Busters were my favorites.

Too bad you won't be there in March- if you can get there, the HOUSTON rodeo is the best in the world; if not, then I would suggest visiting Fredricksburg and Gruen (Gruen Hall in particular) for sure.

Thank you all for your helpful replies!

I think now I have an itinerary:

Oct 12 (thursday) - Arriving San Antonio in the evning and drive straight to Seguin‏.

Oct 13 (Friday) - Seguin - Rodeo and all the activities around.

Oct 14 (Saturday) - Drive to Gruene‏, after drive to Lockhart to eat bbq (lockhart smokehouse?), After go to fredericksburg. (Optional - only if have time go through Blanco).

Oct 15 (Sunday) - Bicycle around texas hill country, also visit Luckenbach (Maybe better sleep there?). In the evning go to San antonio.

Oct 16 (Monday) - San antonio (River Walk Walkway, The National Shooting Complex)

Oct 17 (Thusday) - San antonio 6 flags.

Thank you so much again!

Amit

Amit, a few comments.

Oct 12 - I don't know what accomodations will be like in Seguin during a rodeo, but since it's only ~ 1 hr away from SA, you could easily stay overnight in SA and then drive to Seguin in the morning.

Oct 13 - I'm sure you've checked the schedule of events, but since rodeos are multi-day events, you might want to see that there are events of interest for you on Fri. Like are the rodeo events on Fri or Sat?

Oct 14 - This is a bit of driving around all day. It's doable, but you'll be running around. If possible, you could have dinner in Lockhart on Oct 13 (if you are willing to leave the rodeo early). I recommend Black's or Kreuz for great BBQ. Then you could drive to Gruene on Oct 14 for lunch at Gruene Hall (get there early as the line can be long). you could make your next stop Fredericksburg where the Pacific War Museum is nice if you're into WWII history (famous Admiral Nimitz is from Fredericksburg). You could also do some bike riding on this day.

Oct 15 - while in Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock is not to be missed. Look it up. I recommend this for Oct 15 and not Oct 14 because you'll want to get there early to (a) enjoy the cooler weather and (b) avoid the crowds. They limit access to the park for environmental concerns, and it often closes after lunch time on weekends. Personally, I would do this rather than go to Luckenbach.

Have a great trip. The Hill Country is beautiful.

You might want to consider checking out the State Fair if you are coming to the Dallas area. It will be underway during your visit and is a fun Texas experience. You can catch a DART train to the front gate.
