Rocky Mount, NC--potential relocation????
Would love to know about Rocky Mount, NC. We are well into a recruitment process and are paying a 3 day visit this weekend. Can anyone with current experience tell me what life is like in Rocky Mount? Mostly interested in dining, night life, civic clubs, Presbyterian churches, any live theater, etc. Thanks in advance Fodorites!!!!

ttt,
a little help North Carolinians? |
Sorry, no Rocky Mount Fodorites I guess.
I live 3 hours west so I'm no expert, but: 1. I used to visit college friends in RM 40 years ago and always enjoyed my time there. 2. Every person I ever met from RM liked living there. 3. There will be a nice Presbyterian church and several civic clubs. 4. Dining, nightlife, and live theater???...where do you live now? The barbecue will be better than any served in New York City. 5. You're an easy drive from Outer Banks and Raleigh. You'll have a good feel for it after 3 days. |
Rocky Mount is a town of 55,000 that has seen better times. Crime is high in the town center with the town itself has experiencing "white flight". It is located on Route 95 about an hour south of the Virginia border.
Raleigh and the college/research triangle area is about an hour away from Rocky Mount. Cape Hatteras is about two hours away. |
I think George covered it well... You mention recruitment process, so I'm thinking this is a job related move.... There isn't a ton of industry around RM, and selling your house when you move again might take longer than a city that is growing..... Not a bad town, but not a thriving one... and you DEFINITELY have to like Southerners...:)

Just looked on Realtor.com and you can get a five bedroom, three bathroom on five acres for $ 285,000 asking price outside Rocky Mount.

Please tell us YOUR impression of Rocky Mount after your visit. Will you take the job? |
Spent a few days in Rocky Mount and decided that this community would not work for us. While it's home to many people who are probably very happy to live there, it didn't appear to be the type of community we would enjoy. Seems to have been a good deal of industry lost in the last few years and many high-end homes sitting on the market. Would have loved NC and the job I was considering, but don't think this would have been right for us.

Thanks for reporting back.
