Rock climbing, etc, in Moab
I have been trying to get in touch with Desert Highlights, the outfitter than Spiro (hope you're reading!) recommended - but they don't answer their phone or my e-mails. If they are indeed not in business anymore, does anyone have other recommendations? My early-20s boys want to go climbing, rappelling, etc. when we are there in July.

Desert Highlights is an owner/operator. This coolish Moab June I imagine they are delightfully busy. I am local to Moab. Have forwarded the link to this request and will swing by the office during a break today (June 15 2011) Let's see what's up!

I just read. They have sometimes in the past not been timely in answering my emails, but they usually do within a few days. You might try them early in the day or late in the day. Keep trying. I think Moab Adventure Center does canyoneering as well, but my two trips with Desert Highlights was great.

UtahMentor - thanks so much! Spiro recommended Desert Highlights so much that I was really disappointed. And Spiro - didn't you do a Utah trip over Memorial Day - or am I confused and you are going over Labor Day?

The door is open at Desert Highlights. Muddy Creek has been running and that is where the staff have been busy. You should see the personal crafts that are used to run the Chutes there. http://southwestpaddler.com/docs/muddyut.html
Gave Matt a heads up about you. (There were two people lining up a trip somewhere when I popped in.) |
I don't blame them - a little too remote for me at my age, but if I were younger.......Thanks so much - really appreciate your help. I will e-mail now/call tomorrow.
Where would you suggest eating in Moab? I've had some suggestions, but there's never too many! We staying in a cottage - one of the Dog and Moose ones - so we might have a meal in (someone told me about a wonderful butcher's shop) after so many day of eating out, but I would definitely want one meal out! |
I heard back from Matt - thanks again!

I am going to post my recent pictures today.

My wife and I had to wait for a booth about 15 minutes at the Moab Diner. The food is great and the ice cream too!
http://www.moabdiner.com/ordereze/1000/Page.aspx The pasta place we ate at was not so good and slightly overpriced IMHO. |
I had one dinner at Pasta Jay's, and I was not impressed. Maybe this is the same place tomfuller went to.
On the other hand, I thought the food was really good at Moab Brewery. http://www.themoabbrewery.com/ I'd probably have two or three more dinners there before I went looking for another restaurant. They'll make food to go, in case you feel like relaxing in the cottage for dinner, but your arms are too tired from climbing to do any cooking. |
Pasta Jays and the Moab Dinner are two different places if memory serves me correct.
I thought the Moab Brewery was ok, but I wouldn't give it super high marks. |
Yeah, I was thinking maybe Pasta Jay's was the place that tomfuller didn't like so much.
|
Yes, that was the place that was not good.

Utahmentor,
Do I know you?? Anyway thanks for the link to Muddy Creek. That sounds like a great trip and I would like to do it the next big snow year. I wish I had known sooner, I would have taken advantage of the big runoff. All, I visit Moab often I and like Moab Brewery, Rainbow something, never can remember the name (wraps & smoothies) on Main St., sometimes Slickrock can be good, but the service is poor. I tried Pasta Jay's twice and really couldn't eat their food. Way too salty and nothing worse than bad Italian. Didn't care much for Buck's either. My favorite is the Desert Cafe in the old sandstone Victorian as you enter town. On the expensive side (for rural Utah), but worth every penny. Fine dining, lovely outdoors, reservations definitely needed most seasons. Have fun! |
I like the Jailhouse Cafe for breakfast(that's the only time they are open). We tried The Love Muffin a couple of weeks ago. It was good, but some a/c would have been nice. It is a place for lunch not really somewhere I would go for dinner.
