Rochester NY restaurant recommendations?

Heading to Rochester (NY not Minn.) in a few weeks. Anyone have a favorite restaurant? Can be ethnic. Can be upscale. Can be not upscale but interesting. Am willing to go outside city limits as well.

Any help, before we get buried again in arguments about tipping, AJ (whoever he is), liberals, etc.?

Hi Pris, welcome to Rochester. Gosh, there are so many restaurants to choose from. Here are a few with comments
Richardson's Canal - actually in Bushnell's Basin, about 10 miles or so east of Roch. Historic Inn on the Erie Canal - fine cuisine - lovely setting - a bit pricey, but worth it.
(716)248-5000

Crescent Beach - Gorgeous location on Lake Ontario - Good food - moderate to expensive (7l6)227-3600

Daisy Flour Mill - A locally popular restaurant in historic setting - moderate to expensive (381-1880)

Edwards (downtown Rochester excellent food 423-0140

Shadow Lake - in Penfield about 10 miles east of Roch. Pretty wooded setting on golf course. 385-2011

When you say "ethnic" in Rochester, you're talking italian. Rochester has a fairly large italian population, and there are many, many italian restaurants. I would be happy to give you more if you wish. Enjoy.

Pris - almost forgot -- if you're in Rochester on a Friday night, you must go out to almost any dumpy pub and get a fish fry -- we all do. Also, don't leave Rochester without having a Zweigle's hot dog -- best in the world.

I would also add the following restaurants (in the city) for your consideration:

2Vines (my favorite) - smart casual
Karma (upscale)
Pomodoro - smart casual
Edward's Pub (fine dining)
Hogan's Hideaway - funky, casual
Jeremiah's - casual, bar-type foo

Others:
Phillip's European - upscale casual
Portobellos - great Italian food, smart casual
Hedges - on the water; fine dining

Enjoy!
