Rochester hotel advice wanted
 

Will be visiting Rochester Institute of Technology soon and would like some input on where to stay and where to eat in the Rochester area.

There are several chain hotels close by on Jefferson Road (which is where the main entrances to RIT are.)

If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, but further out of the way, take a look at Renaissance Del Monte:

Recommending dining is a little tricky without knowing what you like, or how much you want to spend.
There are two fairly casual places in downtown Rochester which I strongly recommend:

I have never been to Tastings, a restaurant opened by the Wegman's supermarket chain, but it receives rave reviews and visits from celebrity chefs:

Although the DelMonte is a lovely property, the trains that pass through on the nearby tracks ruin any chances of a good nites sleep.

You've gotten some good recommendations. I like the DelMonte, and I think you would enjoy staying in the Village of Pittsford (since you can walk to many of restaurants and some shops along the canal trail) but be sure to ask for a room away from the tracks.

I would also recommend the Marriott Courtyard in Brighton (33 Corporate Woods - 585-383-8480), not that far from RIT. Phillips European restaurant right near there is very good.

Near RIT:

MacGregor Grill -- Brew Pub w/restaurant right by RIT on Jefferson Road (great "bar-type" food) 427-8410

The King and I -- E. Henrietta Rd. near Jefferson -- Thai food (427-8090)

Macaroni Grill -- On Jefferson, not that far from RIT. It is a chain restaurant, but the food is pretty good.

In the Village of Pittsford (near the DelMonte):

Alladins Eatery (Mediterrean Food), Pittsford Pub, JoJo, Hicks and McCarthy (more casual)-- All very good.

Others in Pittsford: Bennuccis, Brios, Black & White Steakhouse, Mundo Grill, Marios Via Abruzi, Mamasans (Asian)-- all of these are very good.

Also be sure to get down to the Park Avenue area and stroll around. Some restaurants that come to mind in this area include (there are several others): Hogan's Hideaway, Park Ave Pub, Lolas (actually on Monroe Ave)

In the city (downtown East Ave area), one of my favorites is 2Vine (454-6020). Also the Dinausor Grill for some great BBQ -- they also have blues bands playing almost every night.

Bid on Priceline for 2.5 stars in Henrietta. The newly-renovated Doubletree goes for $48/night. Good location for RIT and for that price, well you can get two rooms!

I know what it's like to do college trips - you don't have a whole lot of time for sightseeing, so you might as well stay close to RIT for cheap.

Thanks everyone for the great tips. We stayed at a Marriott property and enjoyed it very much. My 18 yr old was very impressed by RIT, and my 13 yr old was impressed by the breakfast buffet at the hotel. Boy, that kid can eat! We also made a little side trip to Niagara Falls, which they had never been to before, and rode the 'Maid of the Mist." All-in-all we had a great mini road trip.

Good luck to your son. My nephew graduates from RIT in May and already has jobs offers. It is a very nice school.

i had 2 very nice stays at the brookwood inn, for work. they have shuttle service to and from the airport. and i loved!!! eating at biaggi's, i think it's at the mall there.
