We are going to Roanoke, Va. for a long weekend in August. Is there a suggestion where to stay, and some exciting things not to miss in 2 days? Thanks

The only place we ever stayed in Roanoke was the Marriott (I think it was near the airport) and it was great but it was the only full service Marriott. We did the two for breakfast weekend and actually got an ice storm that weekend so the city was at a standstill. We ate at the restaruant in the hotel and the prime rib was outstanding.....that's about all I can offer

I've stayed at the Clarion, Marriott, Wyndham, and Hotel Roanoke (Doubletree). Hotel Roanoke is by far the best. For ideas about local diversions, see www.hotelroanoke.com/hrcc5.html Also, follow the signs and drive up Mill Mountain (where the big star is) for great views--especially at sunset.

The area around Roanoke is beautiful, and it'll be reasonably cool in August. <BR> <BR>Roanoke is just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, great for a drive through the mountains, and there's a new "living history" park with exhibits and demonstrations about the lives of early Virginians -- I think it's called Explore Virginia or something like that. <BR> <BR>If you enjoy outdoor activities, there's tubing on the James River and all kinds of boating and other recreation at Smith Mountain Lake, both within easy driving distance. <BR> <BR>If you're a history buff, there's lots to see in the Lynchburg area, also a short drive away -- historic homes and plantations, military sites, etc. <BR> <BR>The magazine "Blue Ridge Country" &lt;www.blueridgecountry.com&gt; is published in Roanoke and frequently has articles about the area.

Hey I grew up in Roanoke! Left there almost 40 years ago (yikes!). The downtown market area is an authentic Southern experience. Enjoy. <BR> <BR>To "hey" who posted below: I believe that would be the Roanoke River.
