Ferndale is a cute Victorian village near the road to the Lost Coast, but Trinidad is on the sea and closer to the redwoods of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Even if you got up to Trinidad at 2 p.m., you'd still have time to drive to the park, walk around the redwoods, photograph Roosevelt elk, maybe visit Lady Bird Johnson Memorial Grove, before returning to Trinidad. In May, the sun sets after 8 p.m., so you'll have many hours.

The Victorian architecture of Old Town Eureka is well-worth seeing, and not really out of your way, as Highway 101 runs right through Eureka—and don't miss Eureka's Carson Mansion. I love Eureka Books in Old Town Eureka.

Because the community of Trinidad is small, there aren't many places to stay. In May 2016, we stayed in a cottage with a full kitchen at View Crest Lodge.

We bought Dungeness crab (in season), California sturgeon, salad greens, and Sharffenberger Sparkling Rose (from Mendocino's Anderson Valley) at the Wildberries Market in Arcata. Wildberries and North Coast Co-op, also in Arcata, have great fish selections.

I agree with Michelhuebeli, that Inn at Otter Crest (in Otter Rock, Oregon, north of Newport) is a lovely place to stay. http://www.innatottercrest.com/index2.html
It's in a quiet location, yet close to Otter Rock; the Devil's Punchbowl; Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area and its Lighthouse and Marine Garden (tidepools and other wildlife). We were there last May, and we could whale watch from our room, while bald eagles perched in nearby trees. They have a great pool as well, though we didn't feel like swimming as there were many other things to do (the air was chilly as well, but the pool was heated).

It's a shame you won't have time to see California's Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino coasts.

Thank you again, we looked at places to book, and Healdsburg was very limited, at least in our search... Also, we got offered a wine thing in santa rosa, so we do not have to drive after that, wich is great as this is kind of our honeymoon...

we looked at the itinerary, where we would be and the time we have, and then booking accordingly. Choices and availability, I think it will be a great trip!
