Roadtrip - Jersey City, New Jersey > Nashville, Tennessee
Hi all,
We are two mid-twenties rowdy English guys planning a road trip from Jersey City to Nashville! Basically my friend currently lives in Jersey, so we will spend a few days in New York before going on a 8 day road trip. We've looked at the route and know its a 1800 mile round trip so we understand the travel time implications - but it's about the journey not just the destination eh!
We've marked a few destinations on the way and was hoping we could get some advice on the best places to go and things to do whilst in this great part of the US! We may have a few places now but these probably will dwindle depending on advice.
Our route so far is mainly on the 81 through Philadelphia > Baltimore > Washington > Knoxville > Nashville.
Our route back is looking like Nashville > Louisville > Lexington > Charleston > Jersey City.
If you could offer some advice on things to see and do in these places, and if you think we should go to other places along the route which tourists wouldn't know existed. Also if you have any hostel recommendations along the way, we find these places a great way to meet people!
We want to be immersed in US culture and take this opportunity to really go for it! We like a drink, love sports and enjoy socialising! Open to all sorts of stuff!
Any help would be massively appreciated!!!!
Thank you!

Louisville has a number of museums. Some you might like are the Muhammad Ali, Frazier History, Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum, and the Slugger Bat (baseball). There is a Bourbon Trail, a paddlewheel river boat cruise on the Ohio River, and a baseball stadium overlooking the river. Mammoth Cave National Park and Fort Knox with the gold bullion depository and Army stuff on display would be stops off Interstate 65 coming from Nashville. Horse racing would depend on when you are here.
Lexington has racehorse farms and the Kentucky Horse Park plus much more. You can use Google for details.

Bourbon Trail, most definitely. Unlike in Scotland, "grain whiskey" isn't a pejorative in Kentucky.
I don't think I-81 goes to Philly. It definitely doesn't go to Baltimore or DC.
You should check out a baseball (cricket with strategy and an ending) game somewhere. Louisville and Lehigh (Pennsylvania) have nice minor league stadiums and the tickets and concessions are cheaper in those than in Philly, Baltimore or DC or especially NYC.

Thanks for all the advice! Bourbon trail and a baseball game looks like something we definitely want to do.(it's just cricket with more bases right!? Haha)
Sorry for being a bit stupid but are there any rodeo events? Or is this further Texas way?

Rodeo is probably a bit further south and west, but Kentucky is the horsebreeding capital of the US so check this site: http://www.kentuckytourism.com/
