Roadtrip Ideas - New York to Raleigh with Infant

Hello -
I would like some help in planning a roadtrip from Long Island to Raleigh. I will be traveling with a 10 month old, so will need to stop every 2 hours or so and would like to take about 2-3 days to drive. Are there any overnights that you could recommend? I will be traveling back, as well, so if there is a different route back with different stops, that would be helpful, as well.
Thank you very, very much for your help!

This is an 8 hour drive from NYC so add your Long Island time to that for a total. I cannot imagine why you would want to drag this out (unless it is considered vacation time)especially having a tiny baby. Everyone will be more comfortable being in one place. If you want to stop somewhere and spend 2 days before arriving in Raleigh, then that is good.
I'd go to Charlottesville. And on the return maybe somewhere up in the Delmarva peninsula

You dontt say when you are going, but Charlottesville would be nice in the summer when there aren't so many students around. The campus is beautiful for strolling, and there is shopping there and on the downtown mall. But parking is.an utter nightmare when the students come back.

Gretchen's other suggestion, the Delmarva peninsula, is excellent. Look into Easton and St Michaels, Maryland. Both are roughly half way.

Avoid Washington before 9 AM and after 3. Seriously.

I stopped in Staunton, Va both driving to Florida from NYC and coming home. It is a very pretty town with good architecture, some nice shops and some very good food. We liked the Stonewall Jackson Hotel, which offers free parking; they can give you a refrigerator for your room if you like.

But if you do go via Delmarva, Easton would be a good option. We did stop for a night at St. Michaels on the drive from Florida to NYC a few months ago; it is lovely but stopping there means a detour off the route, which would add time to the drive.

Thank you for your suggestions. We are going in mid July. We are trying to make some stops to make it into more of a vacation, as we will only be in Raleigh for two days.
