Roadtrip from Allentown PA to Longview TX....what should we visit
Hi,
We'll be taking our son to college at Letourneau U in Longview TX this Aug and want to make it a family roadtrip. Other than a stop to visit some family in Lima Ohio we trying to decide what to do and where to go? We love history and theater and have 4 kids from 8-18. Anyone have suggestions?
Thanks!

Some quick thoughts: From Lima, Ohio to
Mommoth Cave National Park in Kentucky then south to
Bowling Green to tour the GM assembly plant for Saturns then south to
Little Rock, AR to the Bill Clinton Library and south to Texas
On the return, or when your son returns for his sophmore year consider taking the Natchez Trace Parkway north of Baton Rouge and visiting some plantations as well as the other historic sites along the way - Vickburg, MS; Corinth, MS; Shiloh, TN; etc

Really depends on which Route you take out of Ohio. If you head South you'll be looking for things in Kentucky, Central and West Tennessee, on through the center of Arkansas.
If you head west from Columbus, you'll be heading through Indianapolis. From there, you could easily head towards the Chicago area on into Wisconsin.
Really just a question of what is more interesting - a Southerly route or the midwest. With the latter, you could certainly visit Springfield, Illinois, go tubing in Northwest Arkanasas (north of the Bentonville area), hit St. Louis, etc.

If you travel from Lima, Ohio to Nashville then you could definitely take the Natchez Trace Parkway from Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi. From Natchez you don't have far to go to Texas. The Natchez Trace is one of the most scenic and relaxing parkways you will ever see. Tons of history as well. For tons of info, pictures and maps, see: http://www.natcheztracetravel.com

While in the Buckeye State you may want to take to the time to visit Roscoe Village in Coshocton OH. Or even the Ohio Amish country which is in nearby Millersburg ..

Just South of Longview is the town of Kilgore which is the town where the east texas oil boom in the 1930s occurred. The town has gone back in and erected oil derricks in homage to the boom all over town and recreate the feel of the boom. The East Texas Oil Museum at Kilgore Junior college is a very interesting look at the oil business. Definitely check it out.
I would also suggest visiting Vicksburg and perhaps some blues locations in Mississippi. You may also want to check out other Civil War battlegrounds along the way.
