Road Trip to New Hampshire + Hurricane Sandy
 

Hello everyone,
I'm about to travel to NY from Brazil. I intend to make a roadtrip from NY to New Hampshire and than back to NY. My main concern now is the first part of the trip, from NY to Manchester, NH. With all this hurricane issues, I'm bit worried about the conditions of the roads.

Starting on JFK Airport, Google Maps suggested to take Interstate 95 N toward Manchester, going through New Haven, Hartford, Worcester, Lowell and finally Manchester (http://goo.gl/maps/2EPVb). Anybody knows if those roads are safe? Or maybe It'd be better to take another route?

Normally, many posters would say to avoid route 95 and take 684 out of NYC to 84 in Connecticut.
However, I think 684 may still have closed areas due to flooding, downed tress and electric lines.

The route you're seeing online ,95 to 91 to Mass Pike to 495 is very easy and since major roads are cleared first, probably the best idea for now. I don't see any problems listed for the coastal Connecticut part of 95, but check before you drive

Expect delays on the road. Most trains in the NYC area are still not running so anyone who needs to get to work is driving.

I live in Central Massachusetts and can advise that the Mass Pike (90) and 495 are opened and traffic is moving very well.

Precisely when are you coming?

JFK is ony opening today - and that is for partial service (just so youknow the runways are at sea level and immediately adjacent to the water - so were flooded). I would first check withyour airline to see when/if you flight will actually take place.

Second - NYC public transit is out of commission for the next 3/4 days and quite possibly longer - so traffic is horrific - since anyone with a car that is not blocked by fallen trees or powerlines is driving to work.

If you stay on the major highways they should be clear - but until you get beyod NYC assume you will hit traffic at perhaps 5 to 10 miles per hour.

@nytraveler I'll be landing in New York on Nov,2. Until yesterday my flight was still confirmed. Tomorrow I'll call again to check if everything is allright with my flight.

Yeah, I'm aware of all traffic I'll be facing inside NY.

I remembered I use the one for NH when there's a snow storm. I googled road conditions CT to get conneticutt's.

Listen to the local radio stations for road conditions while you are traveling. Consider taking the Merritt Pkwy instead of I 95 in CT if there is any problem on 95 (it is closed due to an accident right this minute). In NY the Hutchinson River Pky turns into the Merritt which connects to 91 in the middle of the state take that to 84 or if there is a problem in Hartford on 91, take rt 3 to 2 west to 84 east from 91 to avoid the city..
