road trip thru Vermont, NH, Maine, Mass, RI

Hi there.

My g/f and I are looking at doing a one week road trip thru Vermont, NH, Maine, Mass, RI in late June, July. We can add or avoid certain places if its not worth scheduling. Looking for the most scenic route with the best places and things to stop and see along the way. We want to go down thru Burlington VT and loop around thru to the SE before coming back West and back up thru Cooperstown NY. I would like to hear where we should stop a long the way and what to see.

Thanks for your help in advance!

You might explore Yankee Magazine's website for siggested routes. It's really hard to make a suggestion since you didn't t mention any interests. I really like Bath Maine's 4th of July but Brandon and Bristol VT have great parades. If you like beer or wine, get a trail map and go sampling. i like the route from Burlington south along Lake Champlain and you can cross over the Green Mountains in Bristol stopping at the local swimming hole with waterfall. But maybe you,d like to rent a jet ski or go kayaking. Find a schedule of free community concerts which are usually held in the early evening and manypeople bring picnic suppers. The Norwich VT farmers market has live music on saturdays. Check out events scheduled for Prescott
ark in Portsmouth NH.

There's great scenery lots of places so it,s hard to make a suggestion.

It would help to know where you are coming from. I have a lot of places to recommend, but a week isn't enough time to do more than pretty much drive through these states, especially if you arrive at Burlington the night of Day One and leave Cooperstown the morning of Day Seven.

I would add to dfrost's ideas above that you are unlikely to be able to just find a place to stay, especially in Cooperstown, without a reservation. Cooperstown is packed with both baseball fans and opera fans, especially near Hall of Fame day, and we have had to stay as far as fifty miles away!

Through most of this area, be prepared to stop by 4 or if you are staying in a chain, have them make a reservation for that night before you, leave in the morning.

Hi.

We will be crossing the border roughly around the Ontario/Quebec area into Vermont. I am a huge craft beer fan so I am looking foward to what VT has to offer! We will be on our trip from June 18-26. We're a couple in our mid 30's (no kids) looking for scenic areas to see, nice towns/cities to explore. Just random stops and sites that you'd recommend that the average person should check out. Also places that people might normally stop to see, but you might feel are overrated and we'd be better off avoiding.

Also, I had mentioned to my g/f that hitting 4-5 states might be a wee bit ambitious. So if you have any suggestions as to which parts to skip and make the most of the alotted time that would be great.

Thanks again.

If I were coming from Ontario, either Niagara Falls or I-81, I would go to Ccoperstown, then drive east on US Highway 20 to the Berkshires in Massachusetts, then north on US 7, jog east a bit in Vermont and pick up VT 100, a very scenic state highway, to the Stowe area. You can then cross the mountains to Burlington via VT 108 through Smugglers Notch.

Drink lots of beer. Eat lots of good food. Almost every area has its own craft breweries now. Some of them have really weird beers, but how will you know unless you try? Most serious beer places will give you a taste or sell you a flight.

Return via the ferry across Lake Champlain and either the Adirondacks or down 87 to the New York Thruway.

If you have run out of time, cross into Canada and take the 401 home.

Reverse route if you are entering from Quebec. Next time, do the coast.

This site might be one to look at for ideas on what events are taking place when you will be traveling, both to attend and/or avoid in a particular area.
