Road trip through Yosemite
Hi.
Really looking forward to visiting Yosemite in a couple of weeks time - have heard that the falls are stunning at the moment! We're staying at Yosemite Pines RV park in Groveland in one of the luxury cabins - has anyone else stayed here? We're planning to go through the Tioga Pass on 12th June (in less than 2 weeks time) - do you think it's possible for the roads to be cleared of snow by then? We're heading for Vegas and our back-up plan is to go via Sequoia National park if the pass is not open - has anyone else been here? is it worth a visit? Also, we may go through Death Valley - I have been through it in March - would you advise going through there in June? |
check with the park on the pass. I did it several years ago about the same time (a week earlier) the pass was open but i was driving thru a small snow storm! trails in the east of the park (not in valley) will be snow covered tho.

They say the waterfalls will continue long into the summer this year because of the 180+ percent of normal of snow fall this year.
For Tioga Pass keep an eye on this website: http://www.nps.gov/yose/now/tioga.htm If it's open, it will be beautiful! We've traveled over the road right after it opens and some of the lakes in the high country were still frozen over. Glad to see you have a back up plan. It might be a real close call. If the road hasn't been opened by the time you leave, then check the Yosemite Visitor center for the most current conditions while you are there. Utahtea |
Yes - do check that web site for Tioga Pass info. But I would definitely not count on it being open by 6-12. This year has been a VERY heavy snow season. Several ski resorts only closed this weekend - and would be able to stay open longer if there was a market for skiing in June.
Keep your fingers crossed - but don't get your hearts set on driving through the Yosemite back country. |
Yes, Sequoia (and Kings Canyon) are definitely worth a visit.
