Road trip stop near Atlanta
 

I will be traveling with my family (6 total) from the Montgomery area thru Atlanta and on to Hendersonville, NC. I'm looking for a stopping point for the night-either a hotel or a town-either south or north of Atl.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Montgomery is only 2 hours (give or take) from Atlanta - how about the Mall of Georgia on the other side of Atlanta? Or Anderson or Clemson SC - or Dillard SC

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. We're coming from New Orleans via Montgomery.

Now that I consider traffic, I'm wondering if south of Atlanta might be best as we'll probably be arriving around 4 or 5pm and won't be leaving early the next morning.

There were several Homewood Suites "near Atlanta" (they have 2 bdrm units) in Alpharetta, Buckhead, Cumberland, I-85 Lawrence, Columbus and Peachtree Corners/Norcross but I am not sure if any are in a good location.

You want to go past Atlanta. If you stay south of it, you'll hit traffic next morning. Unless it's on the weekend.

What about Buckhead or Galleria? Both have a Homewood Suites with 2 bedrooms that gets good ratings.

Can anyone give me specifics on how difficult it would be to drive to either coming up I-85?

The Homewood Suites at Cumberland (Mall area) is perfectly fine (and about 5 minutes from my house :)) but it's a bit out of your way. I would avoid 285 because truck traffic going through Atlanta must take 285. For that reason, it's more likely to have traffic/accidents. I agree with the above poster who suggested looking for something around Mall of Georgia (town is Sewanne GA).

What do you think about Lawrenceville/ Duluth (it says I-85) or Peachtree City/Norcross? Are they south of the city?

Lawrenceville, Duluth and Norcross are all on I-85 NE of Atlanta, so you've just passed it, and it'll be fine.

On Google Earth, Peachtree City is SW of Atlanta, but there are so many "Peachtree xxx" in Georgia, it may be referring to someplace else.

Thanks, everyone. I like the fact that Lawrenceville, Duluth, etc are right off of I-85 NE of Atl. Do you think I'll hit traffic that way during afternoon rush hour? My other option is Buckhead-any better traffic-wise?

Don't try to get caught up in the traffic around Buckhead. Just stop south of the city or north of the city - but don't try to deal with Buckhead.

You could always book two rooms (1 at each possible location) that have a 6pm cancellation policy and then cancel the one you won't need.

Do you want just a place to spend the night or do you want restaurants or do you want to see something when you are there?

Peachtree Corners/Norcross is northeast of Atlanta (Peachtree City is a different place southwest of ATL; there are a lot of Peachtrees here in GA), and is probably a good place to stop. You want to get past Buckhead and the "inside 285" area.

We've taken our kids to camp near Hendersonville. It's a pretty easy drive once you are past the Atlanta traffic.

I think we'll stick with either Peachtree City/Norcross or Lawrencevelle/Duluth. It sounds like both are relatively easy to get to and will have a few restaurants and a pool which is all we'll need.

We'll be taking my son to Kanuga and won't be in a hurry in the morning. I think we'll let the kids swim and then head for NC after an early lunch.

Peachtree City is SW of Atlanta.
Peachtree Corners is NE of Atlanta.

Either would be fine for a stop, but they are on opposite sides of the city.
