Road trip: Milwaukee to San Francisco

My boyfriend and I will be driving from Milwaukee, WI to San Francisco, CA. We will spend 10-14 days in total. We want to spend about 4-5 days driving out there, 5 days in CA and 2-3 days driving back. We are flexible about time, as we will be going in June-July time, and we both have summers off!
Plan so far: drive through the Badlands, stop at Custer State Park, and stop at the Grand Tetons/Yellowstone.
While we are on our way home, we will do Yosemite (maybe Sequoia).

Are there any other places we need to stop? Even so far as an AMAZING restaurant or hotel along the way.

He is from the San Francisco area, so we know all that we want to do in that time there.

Coming through Seattle or Portland or both?
Vehicle? Camping or hotels? Make your reservations ASAP if you want to stay in Yosemite.

Coming south on I-15 to SLC and then west on I-80 to San Francisco? The Nevada desert is rather boring.
You might want to see Lake Tahoe on the way through.

US 50 is more interesting than I80. On the eastern side of Nevada there is the Great Basin NP with its natural cave and bristlecone pine forest.
