Road trip from Southern IL to Truth or Consequences, NM

Hello, My husband, our son (12 years old), my brother, my niece (10 years old), and I will be taking a road trip from Southern Illinois to Truth or Consequences New Mexico this June. We are looking for a few cool spots to stop and sight see while on our drive. Any suggestions?

How long do you have for this trip?

You could hike at Palo Duro Canyon just outside Amarillo, visit Carlsbad Caverns, maybe stop in Lincoln for some Billy the Kid history or go to White Sands National Monument.

Please do not waste your time in Truth or Consequences. I am from the Cincinnati area and relocated to the Southwest about 5 years ago. There are great things to see and do in Santa Fe, Albuquereue (great zoo). Have not made it to Carlsbad (but heard it is a must). Hope this is helpful.

I also wondered why you'd have T or C as a final destination...
Carlsbad is definitely worth any effort to get there. Lots better things to see and do in ABQ, SF and even Taos.

I see you have 2 identical posts. I answered on the other one. What prompted the desire to Visit T or C?
There are at least 5 places in NM to see that are better than T or C.

Rudy's Country Store and BBQ, Amarillo, TX! Great spot for brisket by weight.
