road trip from california to idaho/montana/colorado
So in December me and my cousin are road trippin' it from Bakersfield, California to idaho, montana, and colorado. we plan on making stops along the way checking out stuff and stopping off at places "you gotta go see" so any places you think are awesome and we should stop off at would be cool!

We LOVE the snow. i worked at a ski resort for 3 years. so we are gonna check out some ski resorts but along the way to these states we also wanna stop off at places. this it going to be 3 or more weeks so we have the time!

First stop If you have not been there multiple times: Yosemite.
Another stop: Mt. Shasta (maybe Tahoe?).
Turn off I-5 in Weed and head up US 97 and head for the south entrance of Crater Lake NP. The Lodge may not be open, but you can drive at least that far before being stopped by snow.
The next stop is Bend and Mt. Bachelor. From Bend head west on US 20 to the HooDoo ski area. When you are ready to leave the Cascades, head east on 20 from Bend to the Blue Mountains and eventually Boise.
Others can tell you more about the Rockies.

Yosemite should be your SECOND awesome stop, The first should be Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park. (Frequently overlooked by some respondents on the CA boards).
On your return route, try to work in Death Valley. Winter is a good time to visit. And it also qualifies as awesome.
I realize that, being from Bakersfield, you may have visited these sites previously.

Death Valley would be a great place to visit after the Grand Canyon. It might help to know where you are starting from and ending and how many days you have to give better advise.
Keep in mind that on Sunday's there is usually a lot of traffic going from Las Vegas to Los Angeles on I-15. Usually starts backing up around Barstow later in the day. Holiday weekends are murder!

Not sure about your specific likes/dislikes but in southwestern Montana you might spend some time in Bozeman which is a fun college town (I went to school there) with good microbrewery's, great local ski resort 15 minutes from town called Bridger Bowl. Also 45 minutes towards Yellowstone through a great canyon is Big Sky, which when I was a kid was a local place but now is large (by MT standards) and huge amount of ski terrain with ability to snowmobile and lots of other snow/outdoor activities.
