road trip/elderhostel
does anyone know anything about the elderhostel spin off for independent travelers called road trip?
|
The only type of "road trip" with Elderhostel that I know of is the ones that last anywhere from 8 to 15 days. Either start out at one location and travel to other locations. I went on one--'Canadian Rockies by train-- 8 days
Check their web site--do a search on 'road trip" I have attended many programs--usually one area or town..Loved each and all.... |
Their road trip catalog is gorgeous. Haven't taken a trip yet.
|
I think you are refering to Road Scholars:
http://www.roadscholar.org I am taking a trip to Copper Canyon with them starting this Saturday, so I can let you know how it was when I return. |
Although I have never taken a Road Scholars program through Elderhostel, I receive their catalogs and have drooled over some of their online course offerings. It is my impression that these programs are higher end and have smaller participant numbers.
|
We took the Copper Canyon trip 4 years ago with Grand Circle Travel www.gct.com and loved it!
I just checked out the RoadScholar trip and they are very similar, except we had about 40 people, the same guide and driver the whole trip, and the cost was a little less. We left from Tucson. SusieQQ I would like to hear about your trip when you get back. Thanks. |
you are right> i did mean road scholar and i am particularly interested in the trip to libya.
|
Call and speak to a person directly at Elderhostel/Road Scholars. This organization seems to be able to offer educational programs to areas with restricted travel..... I am thinking specifically of their Cuban offerings which I regret not taking right after I retired in ' 02.
|
We have taken several Elderhostel tours and have never heard of Road Scholars. So I just called them, and was told that they are related to Elderhostel, but are smaller groups, limit usually 24, and have more free time. Looks very interesting. ((*))

The Road Scholar catalog arrived last week. The Athens to Santorini: A Voyage in Aegean Antiquity on page 19 looks amazing.
A local college professor as a guide in Athens. A culinary workshop on Kea. A visit to a Citron distilleray in Naxos. A local winery on Santorini. All as you sail travel on a private yacht. When am I old enough again? |
Road Scholars are for "adults of all ages". You qualify, starrsville.
|
Really? I thought one had to be 55. Well, now. Let me check the piggybank...
|
My understanding is that there is a 55 age limit for someone in your party but not sure how strictly adhered to, and anyway like Grand Circle the oldsters are primarily a marketing focus.
We've been on many EH and more and more the week long programs include field trips. But you are talking about overseas which would indeed be lots of travel. But lots of ways to see Greece. ozarksbill |
