Road trip advice needed please

Hi all,
Trying to put together a road trip for 10-12 days starting and ending in Denver CO.

Planning to go up through Cheyenne WY with a detour over to Mt Rushmore and Devils Tower. Back across to Cody.

On to Yellowstone for (?) days. Jacksons Hole and Grand Tetons for (?) days before returning to Denver.

Any advice gratefully received, and is this actually doable?

British tourists so any help welcomed.

Thanks in advance

Your trip covers approximately 1500 miles and that is using pretty much the shortest distances between points mentioned.

Of course it is "doable" but a lot is going to depend on how much driving you are willing to do each day and how long you want to stay in each place.

The last leg, from the Grand Tetons to Denver is a little more than 500 miles in and of itself and for folks who usually drive that far in a day and plan to do it without stopping to see anything it will work; for others perhaps not so much.

You need to remember that driving in that part of the US can be somewhat easier with less traffic on highways and being from there I can tell you a LOT of people drive over the speed limit!

I know others will comment. Are you willing to do the following:

Fly into Rapid City, South Dakota for Mt Rushmore and rent the car there; drive to the other places and drop the car in Jackson, Wyoming and fly back (either through Salt Lake or Denver)? It would mean a hire car drop charge but it would save a lot of time. How much is your time worth?

BTW, what is the interest in Cheyenne? Frontier Days? Something else?

Dates for your trip. That could make a big difference.

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies.

The main interest in Wyoming is my son's obsession with the State!! I genuinely cannot provide a why for this, but he has been from an early age.

I am currently based in DEN so it's a logical start/finish place for us - and the return trip does look a little excessive so would probably break it in Cheyenne?

Planning to take 11/12 days to complete, I'm hoping that whilst the distances are large (as everything is in this country) they are manageable. Hoping to go around July 11 and back on or around the 22nd/23rd.

Cheers

Gary

An obsession with Wyoming is a good reason to go.

Given your limited time I'll suggest you skip Mt. Rushmore to spend the time in Wyoming. Note that hotel reservations anywhere might be tough to find, so you should jump on that.

Breaking the trip in Cheyenne does not make too much sense since it's only two hours to Denver Airport from there, presuming no delays on I-25.

Looks like you'll be there for the start of Frontier Days, so you might want to plan a stop. The big rodeo starts on the 22nd.

Good luck, pardner!

About Cheyenne--frontier Days is fun. Good parade and rodeo. Not so good for finding accommodation. Maybe Laramie, but a ways to drive. Greeley the same.

Sounds great

I'll jump on to the accommodation

Thanks so much for all your input
