Road Trip - Portland to Reno
Just a friend and myself. We are looking to gamble a bit in Reno, maybe check out Lake Tahoe. Any ideas on what to see in between Portland and Reno? I figure it is a 10 hour drive and ideally we would like to drive about 5 hours and then stay the night somewhere. Anything good to see? Any casinos along the way?
Thanks

when are you traveling? In winter it would be an iffy drive. Right now the roads are fine, last week there was heavy snow and lots of chain requirements and closed roads. It would be a crap shoot weather-wise -- unless you have a LOT of flexibility and can delay leaving for days at a time.
I-5 and the other mountain roads can have very changeable conditions.
Long story short - in winter I would fly and forget about driving it.

Weather (snow) not being a factor, five hours out of Portland puts you close to Ashland, which is worth a stop. The only casino I know of is Seven Feathers in Canyonville, but that's not much over three hours from Portland, if that.
We did that drive a few years ago, and just happened to stop for a picnic lunch at Burney Falls... beautiful. The falls, not so much the park.

Beachbum's got it. Stop at 7 Feathers, Spend the night in Ashland. Next morning, go I 5 south to Mt. Shasta, take Ca 89 through Susanville to Reno.
