Road to Hana

Heading to Maui in May, arriving on a Friday. Planning on driving the Road to Hana on Sat...will traffic be heavier on the weekend/should we save this for a weekday trip?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Just returned from Maui a few hours ago... Did the road to Hana on a Wednesday and really didn't encounter very much traffic. I think that the time of day - not the day itself - is the key. We were staying in Huelo at Cliff's Edge (drop dead gorgeous) between mile marker 3 and 4 of Hana Highway and were the only car on the road at 7:00 a.m. Definitely get an early start - the earlier the better. And if you get to Halfway to Hana House at the right time, the banana bread is still warm/fresh. :)

ITA with beanweb. Getting an early start on the road to Hana makes the difference. :-)

Actually, I think the traffic is much lighter on the weekend, particularly Sunday. This is important on the return trip.

Also, leave early, your first couple of days you will be on mainland time anyway, you will avoid a lot of the very slow commercial truck traffic. Buy the CD narration at the Kiosk at the Shell station just at the turn for the Hana highway; it makes the drive way more entertaining. Leave room for some of the baked goods sold at the roadside stands, they're great. We've done the Hana Highway several times and never tire of the drive. Be sure to go beyond Hana to O'heo Gulch to see the pools and hike up to the waterfalls. It makes for a long day, but well worth it. Take water and some snacks there is no potable water at the Haleakala NP.
