Riverwalk Restaurants

We will be in San Antonio in June and staying at the Westin on the Riverwalk for two nights. We would appreciate any suggestions for a great place to have dinner. We enjoy good food, and lively atmosphere. Thanks for your help.

Boudro's or something close to that. Good food!! For BBQ there is a County Line.

I second Boudros. You can sit outside (if it's not too hot) and watch the action while eating. There is a website that lists most of the Riverwalk Restaurants, but I can't find it right now. I did find this one (Scroll down and you'll find some of the restaurants)

I have fond memories of last year's stay at the Hyatt on the Riverwalk and dinner the first night at Boudro's. I reserved a table over the Internet and was not disappointed. I especially remember the guacamole salad prepared at tableside; the prickly pear margaritas are not to be missed. Also see the review by Robin Barr Sussman on Bourdro's and other area restaurants at: http://www.sallysplace.com/food/dini...an_antonio.htm

For late evening jazz and drinks stop at The Landing. Enjoy your trip!

You'll get no argument about Boudro's - it is terrific, and consistently gets rave reviews. Presidio is also a good choice. Paesano's offers good Italian (try their signature Shrimp Paesano). Biga is a sort of trendy but reliably good place to eat an upscale meal, very close to your hotel. Old Original Mexican Restaurant serves (arguably, of course!) the best Tex Mex on the river.
You'll find lots of online info, for example at http://www.spotlightworld.com/tx/sat...nts/index.html OR http://san.antonio.diningguide.net/dl1rw.htm OR http://www.nasig.org/trinity/food.htm

Paesano's is wonderful. Have also heard good things about Boudros. Have fun!

Thank you all for your suggestions. For our first night's stay on the Riverwalk I did make reservations at Boudros, also Old Original Mexican Restaurant sounds great. Any other great ideas are greatly appreciated!

Not dinner, but for Lunch you should go to Dick's Last Resort on the Riverwalk.. it was recommended to us when we visited last summer and was a lot of fun. Very casual and waiters are funny. Very inexpensive.

I've been to Old Original, and it's not that good. My husband is from South Texas, so we are picky about what we consider good Mexican food! We actually prefer Tomatillo's on Broadway, which is not on the Riverwalk.

Dick's is a great place to go for munchies and drinks. The food is unremarkable, but I have several "Helluva Hurricane" souvenier glasses from there! (Buy the glass for $5 and get refills for $2.) In the evenings, they will have a live band playing old favorite songs, and they'll let women from the audience get up and play the tambourine with the band!

Is the Dick's Last Resort in SA related to the one in Chicago...? I've been to that one, and, er, it was interesting. My recommendation is: Go for the T-shirts, skip the food.

Dicks isn't for the food, but maybe for fun? Personally it's better with a large group. Last time I was there we did have a good laugh... A woman walked in with a friend. A waiter stuck a little sign on her back that said "Leave my ears alone! I know what I'm doing!"

Not for everyone...

For an over-the-top experience, dine at La Reve on Pecan St. downtown, named best restaurant in Texas last year by Gourmet Magazine. It's a small, unpretentious restaurant with outstanding food. I believe the 4-course meal cost about $65 or $75, but every bite is a dream. They bring another 6-8 unexpected "mini-courses" at various times and whet the appetite with marvelous descriptions of each dish.

Will second La Reve. Also consider Biga on the Banks and the Fig Tree. For Mexican, try Las Canarias.

The Original Mexican Restaurant is really the "worst" food on the riverwalk. They need to get rid of that place.

I loved Casa Rio, excellent food for mexican food.

Catmomma Jun 6th, 2003 05:09 AM

I can't believe no one has mentioned La Margarita at the market. Its been around forever and has great Mexican food.

KarenL Jun 6th, 2003 05:11 AM

I also enjoyed Paesanos and Landry's and the Little Rhein Steakhouse when we were there last year.

There's also a nice little German Deli just off the Riverwalk that we loved. Can remember the name but our hotel bartender told us about it and we went for a great lunch. Ask at your hotel about it if your into that kinda stuff.

Have fun.

Guess that's why they make chocolate AND vanilla ice cream - I think Casa Rio slings tourist schlock, some of the worst Mexican food on or off the Riverwalk in SA! It's much like the kind of stuff servd in school cafeterias in the Midwest on "Mexican food day." The Old Original, on the other hand, serves food like what I eat in <la cocina de mama.>

elberko Jun 6th, 2003 06:00 AM

The deli KarenL mentioned is Shilos. I haven't lived in SA in years, but I still remember their split pea soup and cheesecake.

I agree with everyone who suggested Boudro's. The last time I was there I made reservations to have dinner on a riverboat. It was Boudro's great food, and lots of fun. We met other people & actually still keep in touch with a couple from another state.

Another great place is Mi Tierra it's by the market place and it is excellent for breakfast, lunch or supper.
