Right whales have arrived in Cape Cod Bay
 

If you have the opportunity to visit Cape Cod it is a great time to see the right whales. Around 70 were counted over the weekend by aerial survey. A typical year might see 35-50. There is an unusually large bloom of the zooplankton they feed on. You can google Provincetown and whale watching for details.

I am not involved in this in any way. I just love the whales. If you have never seen them diving and gliding through the water you have missed a wonderful sight.

Yikes would be right! I have a friend in New Jersey who saw them right off a beach there this weekend. So cool!

We went on a whale watch tour last year while on the Cape. It was great! I would definitely recommend it.

Will they still be around in July? It's been several years since we took a whale watching boat ride, and I think this year we'll finally do it again!

I went to the beach. I did it again today. Just after high tide seems to be a good time. There were 100's of people. If you go bring your binoculars, they are not real close to shore, but you can see them playing, spouting etc. - it's quite a site

I've decided. Your posts have convinced me to take the kayaking trip in the San Juans this summer to see the whales.

I wish I could catch a plane up to the Cape to see them NOW! :-)

starrs - you will not regret it. Watching the whales is fascinating. I read that about 20% of the worlds population are off the Cape right now. there are only about 70.... when you consider there used to be tens of thousands of them it's sad. But, nature prevails and the population is getting a little stronger. Go see them and appreciate their majesty and imagine the past.

Saw the bulk off Race Point Sat. am around 9:30am (hump backs, fin and right)- prior to high tide - sort of had the whole place to ourselves. Nothing at Herring Cove.

Saw less on Sunday - saw an unknown giant black and white tail - can anyone guess what that is?

The waters are warmer this year and generally the whales stay closer to the shore until around May 1 - perhaps they might leave though due to water temps.
If you go out in a boat later into deeper and colder waters you'll most likely see something - I have on numerous occasions but it's always a gamble.
