Ribs in New York
Can anyone recommend a restaurant in New York known for really good ribs (baby back)?
Thanks!!! |
Manhattan isn't exactly known for its bar-be-que. That being said, here are a few ideas:
* Blue Smoke (E. 27th Street) -- Danny Meyer's take on BBQ. Excellent. Do NOT miss the mac & cheese. * Pearson's (E. 81st Street) -- Traditional, delicious. * Brother Jimmy's (3 locations, UES & UWS) -- Ultra-casual, rowdy, loud, fun. * Tennessee Mountain (SoHo, Spring Street) -- Also casual, but not as rowdy as Brother Jimmy's. Enjoy! |
Gekko has given you a good list.

A new place is opening this weekend on W. 23rd St. called RUB - it is reputed to be run by a very respected pitmaster from the south. All the BBQ freaks on chowhound will be obsessing about this place for the next month, so you might want to check out www.chowhound.com
There is also a place on West 131st Street called Dinosaur BBQ which is a branch of a much loved Syracuse, NY mini-chain. We stopped there once recently, had some pulled pork and brisket, but didn't get ribs. We weren't that impressed. NY BBQ should NOT be judged on the same scale as NC, SC, GA, TX or almost anywhere else - in my humble opinion. It just can't compete. It can be good (Blue Smoke, Ida Mae's) but it's not the same. Gekko's list is pretty good (ohmigod I think that's twice in 2 weeks I've agreed with him - a miracle!!!!) I actually think Virgils barbequed lamb is good, and my husband thinks there ribs can be ok. |
Gekko took the words right out of my mouth. The reason NY isn't great at BBQ is because it is nigh on impossible to recreate the kind of "smoking pit" you get in the southern states mp mentioned. Danny Meyer studied this problem for months and created some kind of enclosed smoker thing that passed the city's clean air regulations.

I prefer dry ribs and Daisy May's on 11 ave & 46 st. has them, take out only.
http://daisymaysbbq.com/ No one's mentioned Virgil's BBQ in Times Square. Considered very good despite the location. |
Sorry, mclaurie, Virgil's is okay (and its location convenient), but it can't compare with the other four!

Dinosaur Barbecue New York City
646 W 131st St, New York, NY 10027 212-694-1777 http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/ |
What about ribs at places like Miss Maude's and Miss Mamie's? I've only done fried chicken there, but I'd think the ribs should be the "real deal"? |
I 2nd Blue Smoke.

Is Dallas BBQ still open?
|
Yes there are about 5 of them around town but not considered nearly as good as the ones mentioned in this thread. Here's a list with details
