Rhode Island in November
 

Taking the advice of several posters, we've decided it would be better to stay on the mainland of RI in November, and maybe just do a day trip to Block Island if the weather's nice.

However, instead of stayiing in Newport, we'd prefer to be on the "western" shore, perhaps Narragansett or another spot you may suggest.

Any suggestions of B&B's oe other nice places to stay?

You could choose to stay on the island of Jamestown which is just "over the bridge" from Newport. The island is small with some great coastline to enjoy but there will be a lot of solitude in November. The Bay Voyage Inn has great Sunday Brunch. You might check out their website. You would be a 10 minute drive or less to Newport and about a 30 minute drive to the Block Island Ferry.
If you are determined to stay closer to the ferry, there are quite a few inns in the Narragansett area, however, I have never stayed in any of them.
One of our personal favorites is the Shelter Harbor Inn in Charlestown. They have about 10 rooms and a restauarant that is popular with the locals. While it is not on the water, it's a short distance away. That would be about a 20 minute drive to the ferry.

We're also wondering about Blueberry Cove Inn. Have you, or anyone else stayed there?

Clousie, any reason in particular you are deciding to stay over in Narragansett/South County? If you want solitude and a small-town atmosphere than I agree you are going to the right place (and I second Emily's suggestion of Jamestown), but if not I would reconsider Newport (assuming you've never been). While Narraganseet and environs will be convenient for your Block Island Day trip, I think the rest of the time you will be really challenged to find stuff to do and that is open. And if the weather is bad, you're probably end up in Newport most of the time anyway. Price shouldn't be too much a factor in November. Just a thought.

Yes, it probably does seem strange that we're interested in South County, but we are looking for a quiet area. Love to walk on the beach for miles, birdwatch, hike or even poke around small towns--any suggestions?

Also looking for restaurants that would serve good local seafood , with some ambiance would be great.

We've done the Cliff Walk and some of the mansions several times in Newport, but you're right, we may actually end up there again.

The Coast Guard House in Narragansett has a great location right on the water, but I can't give a recommendation on the food. Galilee, where you would pick up the ferry for Block Island, has a couple of casual seafood restaurants that have views of the fishing boats and ferries coming in and out. George's and Champlin's are both in Galilee.

Ahh, that makes more sense. I didn't know you had already been to Newport, so for what you are looking for South County will be excellent, IF (and it is a big if) the weather cooperates. Walking the beach for miles in 48 degree windy rain won't cut it, but you might luck out. And you have Newport to fall back on, as you say. Enjoy your long weekend!
