Revolutionary War HIstory
 

I live on the East Coast and would like to see some revolutionary war historical sites. This does not have to be battlefields but anything of historical importance from that period. Thanks!

Well you can't do any better than Boston! I highly recommend the free walking tours given by the park service. <BR>From Boston you can easily branch out to Lexington and Concord Mass. <BR> <BR>If you're further South go to the battlefields in Virginia. We visited Yorktown which was very interesting.

Jeff, <BR>Actually I live in Delaware. I could make Yorktown a day trip. Boston takes me about 7-8 hours so I'd have to take some time off to actually see things there. What about Independence Hall in Philly?

If interested in Revolutionary War History, Independence Hall is a must. It is the central point of what the war was all about, after all. <BR> <BR>Other places nearby: Monmouth Battlefield State Park in NJ (you find out the Molly Pitcher legend is true!); Trenton Barracks (see the fine movie, "The Crossing," first); Valley Forge Nat Historic Site; Morristown Nat Historic Site (winters worse than Valley Forge, but not as good a publicity agent); Brandywine Battle Marker (not much more than that); Princeton Battlesite Marker (same).

If it's not too late to answer your query, I would like to suggest Valley Forge, which is less than half an hour outside Philly. Though there isn't much in the way of attractions, it is a very moving experience because you can walk around and really see how the soldiers lived during that time. The fact that it hasn't been built into a big phony theme park makes it more available to the senses and the imagination. You walk into one of those tiny huts with the 8 bunks made out of sticks and stones, and you get a real sense of what it must have been like for those men. You don't see much of that these days. Spending an afternoon in that park can be very rewarding to the spirit.
