Thanks for that post Vaga, filed away for a future trip.

Guess I hijacked this thread slightly, but to follow up I tried to book two nights at VoG B&B before we go to the Grand Canyon at the end of April, but could only get one on our desired dates. So it does fill up well in advance. We are on a waiting list for the second night. Thanks again for the info about that place.

Thank you all so much for the information. I must admit, my head was spinning and I needed to do some more research before making vacation decisions. I have decided to stick with a visit to Zion as planned, and am adding the visit to Escalante. The other suggestions will have to wait until I visit the great state of Utah another time. Many thanks to Vaga for such detailed information. That helped greatly! I'm looking forward to the slot canyons and I did book a room at the Prospector Inn. Thanks again!

Check out the Circle D café and the café at Escalante Outfitters for dining in Escalante. Both offer some really good options in such a small town. Escalante Outfitters even sells a small selection of bottled wine and liquor - very convenient!

As you drive out of Escalante heading east, take the Hole-in-the-Rock Rd on the right about 10-12 miles to Devils Garden - a fun place to walk around some really neat rock formations.

A drive out the Burr Trail from Boulder is very scenic. You'll pass through Long Canyon not far from the start of the Burr Trail - there is a pull off for a very accessible slot-type canyon right off the road. Worth a quick stop.

The restaurant at Boulder Mountain Lodge is wonderful - its called Hell's Backbone Grill. Great food, locally sourced.

If you can rent an SUV, do it. You'll have more room and higher clearance for doing a few dirt roads (if weather permits). Always have lots of drinking water. Not sure how much time you have, but I'd recommend a few days at Zion, maybe a quick stop for a hike at Bryce if your traveling friends haven't been there and onto Escalante. With enough time, I'd suggest doing a day on Route 12 to Boulder. Stay at Boulder Mtn Lodge and do a drive out the Burr Trail. Also a drive up Boulder Mtn is great too.

How many days do you have?
