Restaurants / Portland, OR
Hope to make it up to Portland sometime this summer - any restaurant tips for new places? I just saw a recommendation for Screen Door at 2337 East Burnside. Your thoughts on this place would be appreciated.

Toro Bravo-great tapas
Stumptown Roasters for Coffee Voodoo Donuts Mothers Papa Hadyn's for dessert |
where are you staying? downtown? eastside?
|
Nanabee - people LOVE Screen Door. I haven't been (I'm gluten-free, there just isn't much of a point as it's heavy on batter-fried things and biscuits) but I've heard lots of rave reviews.
Post which restaurants you've been to so we don't list the same ones. Though Toro Bravo is worth a return visit always. Have you been to Le Pigeon? I haven't but I know it's going to be great. It was mentioned again in July's Sunset magazine. |
Screen Door is great ...... and very reasonably priced.
|
Elmer's is a good choice for breakfast.
|
Andina tapas
South park Papa Haydn's Piazza Italia Typhoon |
Elmer's is a chain - there are so many GREAT places to eat in Portland, OR that are privately owned. My husband & I go to Portland once a year for a long weekend of dining, shopping and siteseeing.
Here are some of our favorite places: Andina for Peruvian Tapas - you must make a reservation for this place. http://www.andinarestaurant.com/docs/menu/main.htm Veritable Quandry for brunch, great bar scene, dinner http://www.veritablequandary.com/ VoodDoo Donuts Of course! Saint Honore Boulangerie Fantastic for breakfast. I guarantee you willl feel like you're in Paris at this place!! http://sainthonorebakery.com/ A Cena for great Italian, homemade pasta, and wine. Reservations recommended. http://www.acenapdx.com/ |
When are you going, Nanabee? I'll be there July 4-11. Helping g'ma pack up her apt.

Shar staying with family in SE, but have a car and public transport is so awesome in PDX.
Spirobulldog, I love Toro Brovo and can't wait to try Voodoo Doughnuts. I've heard so much about them and they were highlighted on a Food TV show recently. PDX, Thx for the web site. I love Le Pigeon and didn't know it had a mention in Sunset. halfpair, St. Honore is my favorite. Will also check out Veritable Quandry and La Cena which I've not heard of. lcuy - sorry I missed you -- I'll be there mid August. Hope everything went well with the big move. Thanks to tom, jrcollins, and Kboen for your suggestions as well! :) |
we are staying downtown in Portland, but i have a rental car so travel is no problem
|
Wanted to bring this up again. Ox on M.L.King was recognized and give a James Beard Award. Has anyone been there and what's your recommendation? Is this a fairly new restaurant?
|
It has been open for about a year, so no it is not new. I haven't been there, but have heard good things. It is heavy on the meat, if that matters to you.
|
thanks mms. i don't mind meat - i eat it rarely but do enjoy it especially if it's a really good restaurant.
|
We tried to go and it was a 2.5 hour wait. That was long even compared to Toro Bravo (1-1.5 hrs) that night. Just to warn you. Ambiance was cool from what I saw.
|
Yikes! If they do lunch maybe we will do that instead or a very early dinner.
|
Go early, go on a weekday. You give the waitress your number and they call you while you wait at the bar. We didn't have that luxury of waiting that particular night as we had somewhere to be later. We ended up calling and getting a random last table at Paley's Place; steelhead was amazing.
We don't go out often so you may make it there before us. Post back.... |
Breakfast: Tin Shed on NE Alberta, or the place downtown on Stark (is it Mother's? I think).
|
5alive, I went to Paley's Place years ago - was very impressed.
htt: When my DD lived in NE I went to the Tin Shed often with my little granddaughter in tow, we loved it. |
I just had a lunch at a wonderful sandwich shop. Used to be a food truck, now stick and mortar. Odd location, not sure why anyone would be in the area unless you're like me, visiting someone who lives there. SE 39th AV. and Gladstone St. About $8. Beer and wine.
http://www.shutupandeatpdx.com/ Gorgeous food, a stack of veggies heaped with a stack of thin sliced, tender and flavorful roast pork. The thinnest slice of cheese somewhere in there. I get mine without the bread because I'm one of those gluten-free people, but the bread is so beautiful it makes me want to cry. It's from Pearl Bakery and is crusty and chewy looking. They make some of their bread products in-house, I assume the biscuit is one of them. And the most lovely, thin sliced fresh-cooked potato chips. I have died and gone to heaven. Huge portions, so share or expect to have leftovers. My sister had a grilled sweet potato/marscopone sandwich, again with grilled green kale and rapini. mmmm..... |
wow pdx- that sounds great. I am just down the road in Eugene- almost incentive enough for me to jump in the car and drive north for a late lunch. Will definitely check it out next time I am up there.
