Restaurants on the Big Island
 

Will be spending Christmas on the Big Island of Hawaii. Staying near Waikoloa. Any restaurant recommendations. Will we need reservations?

Hi John. I'm not sure what you're looking for but I wouldn't go to Hawaii without eating at Roy's. Take a sweater -- they crank up the AC. And you're in luck since there's a Roy's right in Waikoloa at King's Court(?), a small collection of shops and restaurants just before you get to the Hilton. Also try the restaurant at the Four Seasons (the cover picture on a 1998 (November?) Wine Spectator) and Orchid at Mauna Lani, perhaps the best food we had on the island. All three of those restaurants rival the best of Boston. I would probably make reservations everywhere and especially at Roy's as it's on the small side and very popular. <BR> <BR>Have a wonderful trip. I love the Big Island!

Good name. <BR>We're very fond of the Canoe House at the Mauna Lani, very romantic, and Merriman's in Kamuela. Reservations certainly. Write and let us know if the Waikaloa puts up its 6-foot chocolate angel in the lobby. <BR> <BR>For a change, hit Sam Choy's cafe in an industrial park down the road toward Kona from the airport. Spam, loco moco, breakfasts to die for, kids, noisy... <BR> <BR>(Homer Simpson voice) Ummmm...loco moco...

The Batik Room at the Mauna Kea. Reservations definitely! Or call to see if they still do the beautiful outdoor buffet luncheon on the terrace.

If you are going to Volcano Park, definitely visit the Lava Rock Inn in Volcano Village (about 10 minutes away from the park entrance). <BR> <BR>It looks funky on outside, but is a wonderful family restaurant. The food was great AND inexpensive. An usual combination on the big island. <BR> <BR>Stay away from the Chinese restaurant near Roy's in Waikoloa Beach. They charge extra for soup and white rice. <BR> <BR>Roys was great, but be prepared for sticker shock.

Merriman's in Wailea is wonderful. We have spent many Xmases on the Big Island and know you will enjoy. Roy's, Mauna Kea Batik and the Japanese restaurant at the Hapuna Prince are all good,too. Enjoy.

If you happen to be headed across the island, I'd highly recommend Surt's in Volcano. A small, intimate restaurant, great service and amazing dinners and deserts! Away from the high tourism of Kailua-Kona, though, if you're staying there, quite a drive. I made a reservation last New Year's Eve, but I don't really think you need one other times. Kau is a wonderful part of the Big Island.
