Restaurants near Norfolk Airport/ORF or en route from ORF to OBX

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a good local restaurant near the Norfolk Airport/ORF and/or en route to the Outer Banks/OBX? We like just about anything except for fried fare. We are getting off a plane around 4:15, picking up a rental car and will no doubt be *famished*!! Thanks so much!

Fellini's on Coley (Colley) Ave. It is Italian. I used to live near there, and it has been awhile, but it used to have outstanding food, some of the best I've ever had. You might check out current reviews.

Unfortunately most of the places right outside the airport are mostly chains. If you were to venture down to the Ghent area of Norfolk( not exactly en route but not too far out of the way) I would go to Azar's(greek/lebanese), No Frill Grill(I love their pita sandwiches) or if you want some history Doumar's (invented the ice cream cone). A little more en route would be The Baker's Crust off of Greenbrier Blvd in Chesapeake,VA. It's a local chain that is a bakery that does great soup/salad/sandwiches.

Also just a warning that it is rush hour on I64 at this time and if you are coming on a Friday there will be a lot of traffic to the OBX (though not nearly as much as a Sat morning).

The area in the immediate vicinity of the airport is not very interesting so unless you want fast food, keep moving.

I don't remember if you said which day you're arriving in your other thread but have to assume it's Fri, Sat or Sun so, as mentioned, traffic in the Norfolk area and on the way to the OBX is likely going to be an issue.

I second the motion for Baker's Crust. It's not that far off the interstate and is maybe 20-30 minutes from the airport depending (ugh) on traffic.

brmsimmons, I love Doumar's.

OK, now I'm hungry for Doumar's BBQ and limeade.

You need to go to Capt. Groovy's at 8101 Shore Drive. It's less than 4 miles from the airport, takes 10 minutes to get there. You won't be disappointed. Mostly seafood, but with an eclectic twist. Check out their website: www.captgroovysgrillandrawbar.com. Also, diagonally across from Groovy's is the Surf Rider at 8180 Shore Drive. It's at the Vining's Marina. Everything is homemade. Nice view of the marina on the Chesapeake Bay. Their website is: www.surfridergroup.com

Definitely second Captain Groovy's. Not fancy but good food at reasonable prices and not a difficult drive from airport and back to 64.

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions!! I will be using them on my way back to the airport, because, unfortunately they left a carseat for our youngest on the commuter jet from Chicago and we had to wait several hours before it came it, so we couldn't even get on our way! Luckily I had some extra sandwiches left in our cooler to get us through the evening...

BTW, the explanation for the carseat was that there wasn't enough room in the belly of the jet at our layover point in Chicago. We had all carryons but for our two car seats!! Next time I'm gate checking those seats! And perhaps flying Southwest direct!!
