restaurants near Ground Zero
 

We are visiting the new museum and wonder about a good place to eat near that area. We like all kinds of food....it would be for lunch

A lot of people don't like it to be called "Ground Zero" anymore

Any suggestions about restaurants?

North End Grill should be good, although I have not been with the new chef; it is about a 5 block or so walk from the site, just north of the Irish Hunger Memorial.

Please do NOT say Ground Zero. It is hurtful to many of those who lost family, friends or colleagues there (a surprisingly high percentage of new yorkers.) It makes it sound as if this national tragedy was part of a video game.

It will always be 9/11, ground zero to me. I have no desire to visit the museum, I have a friend whose view from his office is facing it though. It is hollow ground and I think the fountain was all that was needed.

To me, it will always be the Trade Center. I absolutely hate and hated Ground Zero, because it is generic. As someone who saw the second plane hit, whose building was engulfed by debris twice, and breathed the remains of others for months, I do not need a reminder of what happened.

I call it the Trade Center, too, or the World Trade Center. But I would not get angry about people calling it something else.

Ground zero doesn't bother some people - but it does many others. On that basis it should be removed from out collective vocabulary - and I choose not to respond to questions from posters who designate it that way.

(There are members of my collateral family that are still suffering - emotionally and in their education lives and future because of this disaster - despite prolonged therapy. Seeing it discussed in such a heartless way is painful for many. And I agree that it should not have been made into a tourist attraction - quite a few people think the full exhibit should be only to available - with a very simple single memorial for the general public._

All this posters wants is help finding a place to eat. Bring the rest of it over to the lounge.

I beg to differ Rizzo. Part of traveling is education and learning what the local customs are. Traveling is more than a finding a good restaurant, even if that wasn't your intent.

The OP's name is wordsmith1. Assuming that that is his/her vocation, or at the very least a serious avocation, then the OP understands the importance, the emotion, and the power of words. Thus this is instructive, not a damper on one's lunch plans.

I don't know if the OP is too embarrassed to apologize - but agree that part of the purpose of this forum is to provide appropriate local information - which this is.

I work with NYPD and NYFD guys that lost many and retired after the clean up. They have to go be checked each year for damage to their lungs. They didn't know you weren't suppose to call it ground zero. I often wonder about the café at Dachau. I would never be able to even thing about food there. I think I would be the same at the memorial. Take me across town.

Even the Times calls it Ground Zero. It something I felt from Day One and obviously others felt the same, but I think they did not want to state it at the beginning. I used to exhibit photographs and never once brought my camera to work (three blocks away) to go and shoot the sight. But the thing that made me the maddest was the people who sold souvenirs near the sight, them I wanted to smack.

The gift shop thing has people the most upset. My sil was a film editor for a major news network in the city and she said she edited so much 9/11 film that she hates doing news now. She is working for a different network and has nothing to do with news any longer. It is very painful and will be for many years.

I am sorry for using the words Ground Zero---I do not live in New York and did not know about the feelings attach4ed to this. It does not diminish the sadness and tears I still shed over that day. Thanks for the "education" since I am visiting soon, but really don't feel I need to apologize to anyone....
