Restaurants near 57 Street

My husband and I are staying in the city for the weekend and are looking for restaurants in the area (breakfast included). We are staying at the Hudson Hotel and are looking for some mid priced restaurants $150 - 200 or so for two including wine. French, thai, spanish - we're open. I don't know what the Hudson offers for breakfast but if anyone knows of a place for brunch or a good breakfast that would be great!

thanks for your help

Don't really frequent the area, but I've heard good things about the following:

One CPS - new restaurant in the Plaza Hotel. Looks onto the Plaza and the Park. It's gotten good reviews and the steak was great. It's not stuffy and is a bit hip.

Brasserie 8 1/2. In the basement of 9 West 57th. It's a great restaurant with some very valuable art on the walls. Also a great place just to have a drink in the afternoon. I've only had light dinner here, but it was pretty good. The only thing is that it's in a basement. Not a good location if you want a view.

Atlas - On Central Park South. It was reviewed well for its creative approach to cooking.

Cafeteria at the Hudson is pretty good and achingly hip. There is also Jean Georges at the Trump International on Columbus Circle.

I always avoid hotel breakfasts, since they tend to be overpriced and chaotic. Particularly so at the Hudson. For a hearty breakfast, there's a place called Rte 66 on 9th Ave around 55-56th St. which is great, esp. on weekends. Otherwise there are a couple of nice-looking diners on W57th St., or Starbucks on 57th one block over from you, or in the other direction just past Columbus Circle. For dinner "0uest" on Bwy, Upper WSide, made a cover article in NY Magazine this week. I think $200 is a lot of money to spend for dinner for 2. Want a real gourmet blow-out? Try the famous Jean-Georges in the Trump Hotel at Columbus Circle. The next night you could compensate by eating cheaply and well on 9th Ave in the 50's.

Stay away from the restaurant in the Hudson for it is overpriced and the food is not very good. We stayed there last year and liked the looks of the dining room but not the food. Hope you get a room a little bigger than ours was. Our rooms on cruises were bigger.
I agree and look for a diner on 9th.

We love Beacon at 25 w. 56h St. bet. 5th & 6th - Large, beautiful NY style restaurant - terrific wood- grilled "New American" Food - impeccable ingrediants, lovely service. We also love Aquavit 13 W. 54th St. bet 5th & 6th - elegant, refined scandinavian & fusion-type, delicious fish. Gabriels - 11 W. 60th - robust, savory Tuscan food delicious pastas. The Hudson's restaurant has gotten pretty bad reviews although I've never been. Breakfast @ Broadway Dinner - Bway @ 55th is adequate - Brunch @ Cafe des Artists is an experience (the food's pretty good) For a blow out there's always Petrossian (caviar). Nirvana on CPSouth - the Indian food's ok, but the View! - Spectacular! Thanks for xoming to NY!

We stumbled upon, and loved, an upscale but still reasonable Chinese restaurant at 141 E. 55th, between Lexington and Third.

It's called Shanghai Tea Garden, or Our Place Shanghai Tea Garden.

You won't be disappointed.

Manhattan Ocean Club is on (I think) 56th between 5th and 6th - great food and good atmosphere. Picholine is my favorite in the city (Mediterranean on 63rd and Broadway). Have fun eating!

John G just loves Picholine. It truely is one of the best restaurants in Manhatten. Have some cheese, please.
