Restaurants in NYC with young children

We are staying on the Upper West Side, any recommendations on family-friendly restaurants we could walk to from Broadway and 75th?

mp Jul 16th, 2008 06:47 PM

Just walked by Chirping Chicken, which used to be a funky take out place and now moved across the street on Amsterdam and 76th - (I was on my way to Dovetail)

Nice outdoor and indoor seating, full of families and couples, at 7:00 tonight looked like a nice place for an inexpensive weeknight family meal - check out the menu on www.menupages.com. I always liked chirping chicken.

Also, more upscale - Josie's, Citrus, Freddie and Pepper's, Big Nicks, The Cafe at Fairway.

menupages is good for addresses, times and menus.

Yeah - the Chirping Chicken is good. Also, Nikos - Greek/med. super casual at B'way and 76th. Artie's Deli - B'way near 83rd. Ollie's - Chinese noodle house - B'way near 84th. Check menupages for exact locations and prices but all these are inexpensive and definitely family-oriented.

So it's a sit down restaurant? Are there any bistro type places that are child-friendly?

Chirping chicken is sit down now.

More upscale but very family friendly is Nice Matin. Here's a link:

Just had visiting friends w/ kids (8 and 11) go there after Museum of Natural history - they loved it.

How old are your children? That would help me with giving you some recommendations.
Thanks.

The upper west side is a family area so most places (except the most upscale) welcome well-behaved children - esp if you eat early - as in dinner at 6:30 or so.

You don;t say how old your kids are, or their eating habits, but quite a few places even have kids menus.

Just go to menupages.com and search the west 70's. You can search by cuisine and get diner reviews and actual menus with prices.

If your kids are very young and need booster seats or something do call ahead to ask if they're available.

Most places on the UWS will be accepting of kids as long as you eat relatively early. Menupages.com has a features tab for kid friendly places. Here's a list of all the places they consider kid friendly on the UWS.

I live in the neighborhood and eat out frequently with my 22 month old daughter. I have to say, she's generally well behaved. Most places are pretty kid friendly as long as your kids aren't running around like little maniacs. Here are some suggestions that are within walking distance from your hotel:

Westside Brewing Company - 76th/Amsterdam. Reasonably priced bar food-- burgers, etc.

Crumbs Bake Shop- 75th/Amsterdam -- delicous cupcakes. They have a few tables.. but you're better off getting them to go.

Patsy's Pizza - 74th/Columbus -- yummy Italian

Pappardella-- 75th/Columbus -- yummy Italian

Lenny's-- 74th/Columbus deli-- good sandwiches/salads... very casual.. good for breakfast too.. egg sandwiches, bagels, etc. -

Ruby Foos-- 77th/Broadway Asian food-- nice atmosphere.

Fred's-- 83rd/Amsterdam -- named after a dog so there are cute pix of dogs covering the walls.

if you have girls Alice's Tea Cup is wonderful. I think it is Amsterdam and 74th, somewhere around there. Wonderful atmosphere, lots of fun

I live on 77th and Broadway with a 9mo. We frequent Nice Matin. They are very family friendly. It is loud though.

Other options: Mermaid Inn up on Amsterdam in the mid-80's. Fred's is more of a pub but is also family friendly (although you have to go down steps so no good with a stroller). Isabella's is decent (very popular, but the food isn't quite good enough to justify the popularity).

Bistro Cassis and Citron both on Columbus are French style bistros and I believe have the same owners as Nice Matin. (one is in the 80s and the other in the 70's)

The Brewing Company mentioned above is a pub. Decent food, but a dark pub atmostphere. Chirping Chicken is extremely casual.

Just about anywhere will gladly accomodate kids (as long as they aren't bouncing off the walls). If the kids tend to be rowdy, go to Ruby Foos.

And get an ice cream cone at Emack and Bolios on Amsterdam between 78th and 79th!!!
