Restaurants in Newport?
We will be in Newport next weekend. I bought my boyfriend a night at a lighthouse and will also be in Newport two nights. Can anyone recommend good reasonably priced not too fancy restaurants. Can you get lobster this time of year? We both like seafood. Thanks for any suggestions

Pam

Nothing is cheap in Newport and you do get what you pay for. However, for excellent seafood, you should try the Black Pearl even if it is only to have their clam chowder which is the best in all of New England, even better than Legal Seafoods.

Hi Pam,

We love the "stuffies" (stuffed quahogs) at Christies.......they also have good lobster but expensive! Lobster is everywhere, and the price is a little lower now. Will you have a car? You might get a better price out at Johnnies's in Middletown.

Hello:

If it's seafood you're after - definitely hit Scales & Shells - great food that won't bust your budget. Meals are probably in the $10 - $20 range - or you can grab a bunch of great apps for a great dinner. Sit downstairs for a more casual atmosphere - read the menu from the blackboard or sit upstairs for more formal. Otherwise, try the Red Parrot - you can't miss it when you're driving into town. They have a huge menu - with a lot of great items, seafood, chicken, steak, etc..

Newport is fairly expensive, but eat a lot of little meals in a few places - and you'll have the best of Newport!

Have a great time...

- Jennifer

For your lobster dinner you might try eating where the locals eat- Sala's. It is right across the street from The Red Parrot and has been there for at least 25 years. No frills, a typical Italian family restaurant (small tables, red checkered tableclothes) that usually has a good market price for lobster. The dining room is upstairs.
