Restaurants in Monterey/Carmel
We are staying in Pacific Grove for two nights this weekend. Looking for restaurant recommendations. Thinking seafood or italian but open to other suggestions. Something fun, maybe? Thanks.

Was there this weekend and had lunch-dinner ("lundin"?) at the Forge in the Forest in Carmel. Three adults and two kids.
One adult is a duck person. She declared the duck to be the best she has tasted in years. I ordered a bucket of clams and mussels for an appetizer and the KIDS ate most of it up. Can't remember the last time kids were into clams and mussels! :) The kids shared a huge pizza (10") that was velly velly good. For seafood, we've been to Flaherty's (sp?) in Carmel. One person is still talking about the sand dabs we had there. In Carmel, the Hog's Breath Inn still has passable food, even tho Clint Eastwood no longer owns it. Still in the Eastwood Building tho. There's also Rio's Grill in Carmel Valley. Another great place to eat. If you take the 17 Mile Drive, there are several restaurants at the Pebble Beach Lodge area. One is like an English pub with kelly green everything and the other one (forgot its name) has a fantastic view of the golf course and ocean. Enjoy! |
We live in Pacific Grove. Just tried a new place on Saturday night, MAX'S, in downtown PG. Small, nice and the four of us enjoyed the meal and service. They got an award last year for best new restaurant in PG and deserve it.
FANDANGO'S is also in PG. Well known place. Tiger Woods comes over there when he plays the AT&T. French atmosphere, but not too fancy. You will get a great meal here. ROBERTS WHITE HOUSE is in a large Victorian house in downtown PG. Another great place that people rave about. My wife has been there twice and I have yet to get to go. THE BATH HOUSE is well known and on Lover's Point in PG. Another nice place to try. The TINNERY across the street from the Bath House is not that great. For a fun meal, not too expensive, try HULAS in Monterey. Laid back Hawaiian theme with different menu. We go there frequently. It is off the tourist route but the locals keep it busy. BAHAMA BILLYS is another great place that is off the tourist route. It is located in the Barnyard Shopping center in Carmel. Great food, beautiful restaurant in a beautiful shopping area. CASANOVAS in Carmel is unique. You will think you are in Europe. Try to do one night there. They have a special room called Van Gogh's Table. Ask to see it. For small groups only. Gotta go....there are about 200 more to name but you only have two nights! |
Hi Traveldawg, can you tell me anything about the Holiday Inn Express on Wave street? Is it nice, within walking to shops and restaurants? Any views? Thanks for any feedback.

The White House for the food! The Old Bath House for the pampering service and the views! The Tinnery is not very good at all and Passionfish was OK, but I won't return there.
In Carmel, The California Market at the Highland's Inn for the views and great food. I want to try Fresh Cream in Monterey and Sierra Mar at the Post Inn Ranch next in that area! Bon appetit! We also love The Whaling Station in Monterey for the steak dinners. Bon appetit! ***kim*** |
These sounds great! Anyone else?

If I were lucky enough to be in Pacific Grove this weekend, I would drive to Big Sur and have a long leisurly lunch on the patio at Ventana Inn.
|
Another vote for Cielo, located at the Ventana Inn & Spa. Gorgeous views, great service and excellent food.
I forgot to put a plug in for Roy's in Pebble Beach, one of our favorite places and the bagpiper playing at sunset is an added bonus! Go for the salmon here, it's awesome. ***kim*** |
I did like Passion Fish over both Fandango and The White House. That being said, for seafood ,my favorite place is the Monterey Fish House in downtown Monterey. It's a quick drive from PG and worth the trip. It's casual, filled with locals and has large portions of very fresh fish. I like that you can create your own dish if you want..I had a scallop campi linguine that was to die for!
Do go to Pacifc's Edge for a sunset drink. We actually went after a walk in Point Lobos. If you have not factored in a walk there, you simply must. |
whoops..that was a scallop scampi linguine.

I knew what you meant, Pam! (wink) Cerlauire, chowhound.com also has lots of great info on Carmel area restaurants.
The recent post about the Carmel Chop House is very interesting. You'll find lots of foodie info on that board! ***kim*** :) |
We made reservations at Casanova for tomorrow night and Forge in the Forest for Sunday. Both look great! Thanks for the advice. How has the weather been there?
|
Weather last weekend was cool as it usually is this time of the year. Early morning overcast and fog, then can burn off to make a great day. Have a nice weekend. We will be down there again also.
