Restaurants in Lincoln NE

I need a couple of recommendations for restaurants within a mile or so of the Devaney Center in Lincoln, NE. Also, if someone familiar with the area could suggest a couple of good places to visit, I would appreciate it. We will be there on Friday and Saturday for an event that starts at 7 PM each evening. We will have the whole day to visit any suggested attractions.

Let me rephrase my question because it is not getting respones. Can someone direct me to a better than average American style restaurant anywhere in Lincoln, NE? We will have a car, so getting around is only an average problem.

Lazlo's Brewery and Grill would probably fit the bill. It is regarded by many as the best American restaurant in town. I think there are 2 locations now. Valentino's with several locations is not an American restaurant but does have great pizzas. Try the special (with ham, hamburger, pepperoni, sausage and mushroom)--you won't find anything like it anywhere else.

I lived in Lincoln almost 10 years ago, but there are some things I remember: -visit the Capitol Bldg, it's really amazing, take the tour; -there is a wonderful, small, Phillip Johnson-designed art museum on the UNL campus; -there is, supposedly, a roller skating museum somewhere, although I never got to it; -Pioneer Park: where the deer and the buffalo roam; -you could take a daytrip to Omaha. There's a renovated warehouse section (the name of which unfortunately escapes me.) -one of my favorite bars, ever, is/was O'Rourke's, on "O," street, the main drag; -steak is big. try the aptly named Steakhouse on Cornhusker Hwy. That's all I can come up with right now. I'll be back if I can think of anything else. (it's hard to beleive that I lived there 2 years and this is the best list I can manage!)

I remember a good place called Jabrisco's. It is downtown by the Haymarket District. Not sure about directions but maybe you could do a search? They had a variety of foods.

you might want to try their vistor's bureau http://www.lincoln.org/cvb/index.htm also, I forgot to mention that they have this rather unique fast food change called Runza's. The runza is an Eastern European (I forget which country) baked roll stuff with ground meat and onions. It's not a sit down meal, but definitely local chow worth trying.

Bob, Hi from a native Nebraskan who's lived in Lincoln three different times in my life--in fact, our oldest child was born there--I think it's fate that I end up living in Lincoln again at some point!! Are you going for the spring football game? We are--we live 6 hours away but it's just not spring unless you go to the spring football game--ha! You have some good info from other posters. Lazlos in the Haymarket (blocks away from Memorial Stadium) is our total favorite restaurant in Lincoln. Jabrisco's is right next door to Lazlos and is (I believe) owned by the same people. Visit the state capitol if you can--it's an amazing tourist attraction. If, by chance, you're of German-Russian descent, one of the world's foremost museum's on German-Russians is located on Ave. D, south of the capital. Nebraska is full of people of Russian-German descent (including me:-) and it's a great way to spend an hour. Definitely eat at the Rock and Roll Runza near the University--not as good as the cabbage burgers my Grandma made, but a true Nebraska treat...get one made with cheese. The waitresses wear roller skates-it's lots of fun and the food is great. Misty's steakhouse in Havelock is the best in town--trust me. We LOVE Lincoln--let me know if you want any other tips. We will be in Lincoln 3 nights for the NCAA Gymnastics meet featuring UCLA, Stanford, Alabama, Georgia, Nebraska, Arizona State, Utah, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Auburn, and Iowa. Should be a super meet with UCLA the odds on favorite, but Alabama is the defending national champ. So we will have two days to look around the city - Friday and Saturday. I will try to follow the suggestions here. They sound good to me. So thanks to every one who took the time to respond.

Bob, I'm curious--where are you staying? That might help in terms of what to recommend. Enjoy your stay--love gymnastics--sounds like fun.

We are staying at a Best Western. I believe it is called the Best Western Villager, on O street. We will have a car.

Bob, I looked for you at Lazlos on Friday night (LOL). Seriously, hope your trip was fun and you made it home safely. I love my home state but that six hour trip west from Lincoln is a snoozer every time. Too bad the interstate doesn't run through the gorgeous Sandhills...
