Restaurants in LA

Could someone help me find some good restaurants in LA? I'm looking for something moderately expensive and not the standard Spago's, Wolfgang Puck, Chinois etc. Does anyone have a favorite, possibly quirky, restaurant in LA?

Ash,
Where in L.A.?

Some small neighborhood spots in the Los Feliz/Silver Lake area:

Cafe Figaro/Brasserie on Vermont
Cafe Capriccio on Vermont
Vermont on (you guessed it) Vermont

Cafe Stella on Sunset

Ash -

If you like garlic, try the Stinking Rose on La Cienega (I don't know how to spell it!). It's down the street from the Beverly Center. The food is good and the theme is garlic everything!

If you like pasta, try Prizzi's Piazza on Franklin Ave. This place is not too far from Gower which crosses over Hollywood Blvd. It is right across the street from the Scientology Celebrity Center (a beautiful old mansion converted into use by the Scientology group). The homemade breadsticks with garlic, butter, and parmesan are to die for. The pesto pasta is great and we love the garlic and artichoke heart pizza. Dinner for 2 will run about $50-$60 without drinks. About the same price for the Stinking Rose.

If you will be in Orange County, go to South Coast Plaza (actually, it's in the parking lot on Sunflower St.) and try Maggiano's. One of my favorite places in the world. Literally. Excellent atmosphere, great food (the Chicken Saltambuco (sp?) & Four Cheese Ravioli in Pesto Alfredo sauce are fabo!) and live jazz/Sinatra-style singer on Monday night. The rest of the time, they play piped in Sinatra but it's still great.

If you will be anywhere near Disneyland and like Mexican food, try Los Sanchez. It's on Harbor Blvd. about 3 miles or so South of Disneyland. On the right side of Harbor if you are driving South, away from the 5 FWY and Disneyland. The best everything! When we go, we are usually the only white people in the place! It's great. We drive many miles for lunch on the weekend. We live about 30 miles away. This place will only set you back about $15 for 2.

Couldn't agree more about skiping Wolfgang. My husband calls him Wolf-gag-sucks!

Good Luck!

Warzawa Restaurant on Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica is an incredible polish restaurant. On the outside it looks like a dark wood house with white twinkling lights. On the inside, white table clothes, romantic candles, homey food (the best potato panckaes, lemon crepes, pastas etc.) and terrific service. Oh, and the perfect martini. Pretty resonably priced. It is my favorite restaurant for every occasion and every age group. And certainly not LA trendy. Don't miss it.
