Restaurants in Door County?

Looking for restaurant recommendations in Door County for adults, for nice dinners.

makai1 Apr 25th, 2004 05:36 AM

Hi Kathy,

Where are you staying?

Kathygo Apr 25th, 2004 08:45 AM

Haven't yet booked lodging tho it's likely to be in Fish Creek, Ephraim or Sister Bay. We don't mind a bit of a drive for good food.

Kristofer's and the Mission Grille in Sister Bay are good. Julie's in Fish Creek is more casual but still good. You'll get the inevitable recommendation for Al Johnson's (goats on the roof), but in my opinion, the goats are the best part. If you do eat there, get the Swedish pancakes or something simple and stay away from any ambitious entrees.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Kathygo,

One of our favorite places to stay and to eat is the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek.

Their breakfasts are out of this world! Their candlelight dinners are romantic and the food is very good. They also have fish boils on the weekends and on Wednesday nights. It's a lot of fun to have drinks in their back patio while you watch the cook add the ingedients to the cauldron with the open fire under it.

The fish is wonderful as are the potatoes, etc. The cherry pie ala mode is great, too. Cute place - nice country casual.

Good lunches at the Cookery in Fish Creek.

Have fun - I am jealous. We now live near Dallas and only get to Door County once every other year or so.

Hi Kathygo,

Ok, Sister Bay... Mission Grill is not to be missed. It will by far be your best meal... save it for a special night... great wine list... also don't miss their little boutique shop w/ oh so fun trinkets, hats and jewelry. ;;)

Fun & casual Sister Bay would be JJ's La Puerta for Mexican, or the Sister Bay Bowl for Friday night fish fry. Al Johnson's is fun for breakfast... the swedish pancakes... mmmmmmm!

In Fish Creek, there's a nice Italian spot right on the curve heading north past town... can't think of the name. The Bayside Tavern is great for burgers & beers (or Bloody Marys) especially late, you might just catch Big Mouth or another local band whooping it up... CC Supper Club is ok food, also fun atmosphere especially late for live music.

Also don't miss the White Gull... MAKE reservations so you get the seating time you want... middle of summer I've made my ressies 2 months ahead! Time it before (or after) the sunset... walk to the end of the road to the beach and watch sunset there. It is a local gathering spot to watch it, and the sky colors get glorious... especially 15-30 minutes after the sun sinks into the bay.

Sunsets in the Door aren't to be missed! >:D<

Have a great time... bring your bikes!

Thank you, thank you for the GREAT recommendations!

Kathygo, our favorite places for a nice adult dinner is Kristofer's and Hotel Du Nord. You also have a lot of good recommendations if you do feel like a casual meal. We always go to JJ's/La Puerta - good Mexican or burgers. We also really like the Cookery in Fish Creek and the Old Post Office in Ephraim. If you haven't been there before, you should try to get tickets to the Pennisula Players. It is a nice outdoor theater on the lake.

Cerlaurie Apr 27th, 2004 06:32 PM

I should have said we like the Cookery and the Old Post Office for breakfast.

The Greenwood two miles East of Fish Creek a great old Wisconsin Supper Club.

chaz2316 Apr 27th, 2004 07:18 PM

I concur with the above posters: Mission Grill is very good. You may also want to try Cedar Crossing in Sturgeon Bay. You can get a great breakfast in Stugeon Bay at Scaturo's.

I have heard good things about "Mr. Helsinki" in Fish Creek but have not been there.

If you're on Washington Island don't miss the Hotel Washington.

Al Johnson's is an over-rated relic from the past when quantity was more important than quality.

makai1 Apr 27th, 2004 07:59 PM

almost forgot... I know you were asking about eats, but... ;)

Don't miss the Stone's Throw Winery - stonesthrowwinery.com - @ county roads A & E - 4 1/2 mi east of Rt. 42 on E - tun @ Trio Restaurant in Egg Harbor... their old vine zin and white field blend are great... really a nice spot.

Also, fav shops include Turtle Ridge in Ellison Bay for hand tooled leather bags to drool over, and Imported, fun & funky ladies apparel and trinkets in Egg Harbor.

I still don't think you can beat the swedish pancakes with ligonberries at Al Johnsons. So what if everyone is either on a bus tour or has greay hair!!! Love Mission grill and don't miss the Innaat Cedar Crossing. We can't forget a greasy drippy best burger in the world on homeade bread at Birminghams. Do a Fish Boil ..I'd do somewhere in Ellison Bay or for sure White Gull.
door Cty is the BEST

White Gull Inn fish boil was a terrific dining experience. We watched the fish come a boil, ate the delicious food, and listened to good music. Skip Al Johnson's - highly overrated, very mediocre food.

Kathygo,

I forgot to mention Wilson's in Ephraim. It's right on the main drive along the water and it has red and white striped awnings. It's basically an old soda shop that now serves great burgers, fish sandwiches, soups and fantastic ice cream sundaes and malts and cones. It has the old fashioned juke box where you pick the tunes at the booth you are sitting in.

You must stop for at least the ice cream!

Again, thanks, for all the wonderful ideas. Keep 'em coming!

Are there any new places worth trying?

sjde53 Jul 14th, 2004 07:49 PM

Where's Birminghams?

We still love to go to Al Johnson's--it's a tradition, and we do like the Swedish pancakes (like crepes) with Swedish meatballs.

There's a great frozen custard place in Fish Creek on the bay side of the road.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. Our favorites were Kristophers & Mission Grille. Superb! Also enjoyed Wilson's for marvelous ice cream. Trios (?) in Egg Harbor (?) was good but not great. Had a super lunch at a place on a triangle in Egg Harbor (?).
