Restaurants in DC
 

Plan to stay there late June. Hopefully near the mall, Whitehouse area. Any middle of the road pricewise? We are not looking for luxe dinners, just good meals that are reasonable, maybe some very DC places to have a drink and see the capital in action...

Best fish & chips I've ever had was at Old Ebbitt Grill.

Old Ebbitt is the storied politico watering hole, but it's mostly tourists now. Still a grand old place, and good solid food.

It's hard to know exactly what "reasonable" means, as DC has become an expensive dining city, but we always like Jaleo and Zaytinya; not big fans of Oyamel, but pretty much ever other human is, so we must be wrong; love Le Diplomate, but it's not too near that area and can be hard to get into.

You can't get much more DC than the bar at the Jefferson Hotel--very old school, excellent bartenders, and you really never know whom you might see there.

Since I've not seen it mentioned before on Fodor's, I'll mention a place we had dinner recently - Mintwood Café on Columbia and Mintwood (not the neighborhood you were looking for, but the food was really good).

I also did not care for Oyamel. I did like Joes steak and seafood, but that is pricey!

Just remembered, the baked goods at Paul are to die for!

I second the Paul recommendation. They also have wonderful sandwiches and salads for lunch.

If you are out by the zoo, the Woodley Park Grill is good. American fare.

For breakfast, Jack's near the White House is good. It is a buffet that you pay by weight.

I found that there are many options and I found that many places have a menu out front or in the foyer.

Keep in mind that most attractions in DC are free but food is a bit pricey.

If you like Indian food, I will plug Rasika yet again--first rate. We always have lunch there after some museum-ing. (There's another location in the West End, just as good.)
