Restaurants in Chinatown and North Beach, San Francisco, CA

Will be in San Francisco with my 17 year old granddaughter mid June (next week) and would like a few suggestions for non-touristy restaurants in Chinatown, North Beach and near the Moscone Center (we are staying at the St. Regis). Thanks.

You will get many suggestions. We have always enjoyed Hunan Homes Restaurant on Jackson St in Chinatown and Firenze by Night in North Beach.

For Chinese, I would suggest the R&G Lounge, 631 Kearny.

It's particularly noted for its crab dishes.

In North Beach, try Sotto Mare. 552 Greem at Columbus. Mostly pasta and seafood.

If you want a funky, older place to go, try Capps Corner. 1600 Powell St., off Columbus. Old style. http://cappscorner.com/index.html

In both those areas, parking is very hard to come by.

Park in the parking garage above the police station on Vallejo. Very safe.

We really like Park Tavern in North Beach.

Samovar Tea Lounge in Yerba Buena Gardens for tea, lunch, etc. is in such a beautiful setting and close to your hotel.

We love City View for Dim Sum - it is one of the few places we go to every time we are in SF.

I've been to Samovar Tea Room in The Mission and really liked it; so I will second Centralparkgirl's suggestion.

What kind of budget do you have for places near Moscone?

We like Restaurant LuLu - http://www.restaurantlulu.com/

One of our favorites in North Beach is Da Flora.

Thanks for your suggestions. Debit - my budget is middle of the range - I don't want to pay $40 or $50 for an entrée, but $20 - $25 is ok - is that middle of the range?

I second R&G Lounge - I went with out of towners recently and they liked it so much they thought about returning the next night.

For a nice non-touristy, non-typical Italian, non-Asian restaurant, $25 to $32 is a mid-range for an entre. That's before tax, tip, and perhaps a 3-5% "healthy San Francisco" charge. You can get pasta in North Beach and Asian food for about $18-25.

Here is the menu from my favorite financial district Italian restaurant - Perbacco

Actually, I think $20 -25 is a bit towards the lower end in San Francisco.

This would work, it is a really nice Italian restaurant in North Beach, we actually had a GTG there several years ago
E Tutto Qua

And another one that would work -
Zuni Cafe-

And for traditional, old San Francisco fish and seafood, another place we go every visit is Tadich Grill

I second Debit's suggestion of Zuni and Tadich, but beware that Tadich doesn't take reservations and is very popular.

Next door to Stu's recommendation of Perbacco is one of our favorites, Barbacco - the casual sister of Perbacco. We eat there on almost every visit, usually an early dinner on our first night. Lots of very fresh small plates - great for sharing. You'll order wine from an ipad.

If you get to Pier 39, there is a good choice for lunch, Butterfly. From it's location, I was afraid it would be very touristy with not great food. The crowd is mixed and food (eaten lunch twice) is really good. It's right on the water. Portions are large.

Good to know about Butterfly; always at a loss for decent places to eat over that way. Thanks, cpg!

Been going to Butterfly since it opened. Nice to know it's still good.

For NoBeach we still like The Original US Restaurant as well as the already mentioned Capp's. They are Old school Italian, not the foo foo $tuff some places put out. Ditto an old Love Italy fave, Mona Lisa.

Very sad that Caesar's closed last year after about a 60 yr run.

Tony Gemnigani of Tony's Pizza Napoletna in No Beach also opened up Capo's in No Beach. Whodda thunk good Chicago Style Pizza in SF?

As for the Moscone Center area, Westfield's SF Centre has a few good ones that are not your typical "food court" restos, MY China (Martin Yang's place), Cupola Pizza and Straights. We ate ate MY a few mos ago. Very good. Local pals have been to Cupola and Straights and give them a thumbs up.

Zuni is not close to either Chinatown, North Beach, or Moscone. You'll need to take a Muni Metro to get there (and walk a bit) - or a taxi.

I don't think Butterfly is at Pier 39 - its 2-3 blocks away in the "other" direction from the Wharf.

To me, almost everything in SF is close - with such great public transit. I love taking the Market St historic street car and that works for Zuni.

As a NYer, 2 - 3 blocks is close imo

Kal - we ate lunch in Cupola last year and I was very disappointed with the pizza. It was thin crust, but overly chewy. Whatever else we had was good, but I wouldn't go back because of the pizza. Last visit to Butterfly was less than 3 months ago.

We had a good lunch at Zuni after visiting the Terracotta Warriors exhibit at the Asian museum. Perhaps your grandaughter would like that exhibit.

If someone walks the length of Pier 39 looking for Butterfly - they're going to waste a lot of time searching for it. Also, it's not close to North Beach, Chinatown, or Moscone. We've dined at Butterfly many times. They had (don't know if they still do) an excellent fixed price menu before about 7pm. They are participating in Dine About Town - which ends June 15.

Zuni is always a good choice whether by foot, Muni or taxi.
