Restaurants in Alexandria, VA under $20 per person serving good food

We will be in the Alexandria, VA area this fall and I always try to research the restaurants in an area before we visit. We can't afford to spend $100 for one meal. Can anyone recommend some restaurants that are both good and charge reasonable prices. I consider a reasonable price to be $20 and under per person. Would also like to hear of any that might be $10 and under per person.

Hard Times Cafe - on king street, serving the areas best chili. My vote is for the cincinnati, hubby likes the vegetarian. This will meet your $10 and under.

5 bothers - Best burger around - I think King street and Prince maybe. Under $10.

Austin Grill - great tex mex - midway down on King st. Under $15 pp

Double check the addresses on these, but they are all on King street or block off.

Great crab cakes, soft shell crab, clam chowder and other seafood at The Fishmarket on King Street one block from the water. Sandwiches are under $10, meals under $20.

I dined with a small group last year at an Afghan restaurant on Route 1 (across from the Target store) on the right-hand side as you drive south from Crystal City. We all enjoyed our first experience with a new cuisine--different, with some familiar elements. Rice, kabobs, salads, breads with distinct flavors. And the price was right. Definitely under $20 per person.

Now, if I could just remember the name!! Can anyone help us with the name of this place?

I've always liked Taverna Cretekou on King Street, and I went recently to a Latin American restaurant not far from it, also on King, that was to die for, but I can't recall the name!! It has a salsa dance club upstairs, restaurant downstairs. Both are reasonably priced.

5 Guys is the absolute best.

Hard Times is also a favorite.

Southside 815 has great food. (815 South Washington). It's more expensive than the first two, but even their most expensive entree is less than $20.

Lex's Cajun Grill (formerly Cajun Bangkok) on King Street is really good. Where else can you get Crawfish Pad Thai? The pecan chicken is wonderful.

My favorite restaurant in Alexandria is Cafe Marianna's. It's not right in Old Town, but kind of on the edge, next to a coal pile. Head north on North Fairfax. The food is excellent. It will be at the upper end of your budget, but it won't bust it.

For great Thai, try Rabieng. It's kind of hard to get to (take Route 7 out of Old Town toward Falls Church), but well worth it. And if you can't get in there, Dungrat's is a 60-second walk (same owners), or Raaga next door to Dungrat's has good Indian food (a little more expensive the other two, but not too bad).

Bilbo Baggins (Queen Street) is a nice spot. Good for brunch.

The Rock-it-Grill on King Street (near Hard Times) has the best breakfasts in the area, but there's rarely anyone there because it looks like a run-down bar, and it doesn't open until 11 a.m. on Sat and Sun. But well worth it. Great omelets.

E-I think you're talking about Cafe Salsa.

K Marie-I think the place you're talking about is actually called The Afghan Restaurant. Went to a wedding reception there once, and the food was good.

You should only go to the Fish Market for the sing-along piano bar upstairs, not the food.

I just returned from Alexandria yesterday. We had some great food. We ate at:
Bilbo Baggins (over 20 though)
Cafe Salsa (the BEST!!) over 20
Bread & Chocolate for breakfast (twice)
Landini Brothers
There was a big line at Austin Grill but we never made it in.
