Restaurants for Freeport & Bar Harbot

Hi all,

one week to go and my wife and I are looking forward to our 2 weeks in New England.

Can anyone recommend nice (not necessarily expensive!) restaurants in Freeport and Bar Harbor? The peculiar thing about us is - I can't take seafood but my wife LOVES seafood! So while I watch her chomp on lobster and clam chowder, I'll have to hunt for something meaty lol :)

So if anyone has suggestions do let us know!
Looks like everyone heading to Maine's eating lobster.. except me lol :)

When we go shopping in Freeport, we usually have lunch at the Corsican. Not far from L.L. Bean.

They have lobster rolls, chowder, pizza, and sandwiches/burgers. It's casual, not expensive, and the food is good. I think they're open for lunch and dinner.

I'm sure you'll have no problem finding fish alternatives on the menus in Maine.

I hope you enjoy your trip. It's a great time of the year to go.

I'll also recommend the Corsican in Freeport. They are open for both lunch and dinner and have alternatives to seafood. Very convenient to Freeport shopping.

If you are going to be in Freeport on Sunday, try the brunch at the Harraseeket Inn on Route 1, just heading North of LL Bean. It is reasonably priced with lots to choose from and I for one think the food is great! I would not recommend it for dinner though as their prices go up quite a bit. I hope you enjoy your trip!

Second the Harakeeset Inn in their tavern...in Bar Harbor we found the greatest lobster shack... At waterfront...looking towards the left over the bridge is a lobster shack which your wife can pick out the size lobster, soft or hard shell, the decision to add steamers and corn...They put all in a mesh bag...go upstairs next door and get a table overlooking the water... and let her enjoy.. As a Bostonian and lobster lover we never had better lobster (it'sthe cold cold water) or sweeter and much less than restaurants down here could buy.. Also, there is a famous lobster shack called Reds...going towards Boothbay which isn't far from Freeport.... it's on the left.. Can't remember the little town, but it's charming... If you can possibly stay at the Harakeeset Inn (llook for specials on their site).. they have a great brunch, but even better is their teas at 4:00 p.m. which are to die for.

I have been to Bar Harbor several times. We always enjoy Galyn's and Poor Boy's Gourmet. Reservations for both are recommended. At Galyn's, eat outside on the porch if it is a nice night.

for upscale dining in Bar Harbor, I can't say enough good things about Havana. The food is a little different, sort of a contemporary Cuban and American combination. We had the most fantastic filet mignon there, they also had lobster and such, so something for everything.

Another place we enjoyed was Cafe Bluefish. not quite as pricey, and very casual, eclectic decor. The lobster strudel here was excellent.

I wonder if Parrot Mom is talking about Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound? We didn't eat there, but I've heard good things. its right near the water before you cross the bridge to Mount Dessert Island. But I think the lobster pounds may be the one place where a non-seafood eater would have a bit of trouble. I could be wrong about that.

The Trenton Lobster pound just before Bar Harbor. Yum Yum Always the first & last place we eat on vacation to Bar Harbor.

For Thai, the Siam Orchid was exceptional. I will second the recommendation for Poor Boy's Gourmet. Be sure to make a reservation.

Personally, I thought the lobster was way overpriced. ((b))

We have been to Bar Harbor several times and would not recommend eating at The Poor Boy's Gourmet. This past September we had dinner there and it was below average. We both had the lobster special. First the clam chowder was lukewarm and then the pasta was just about cold when served. The waitress asked if everything was o.k. and I told her that the soup was lukewarm and now the pasta is cold. She looked at me and said well i can't read your mind. She did take the pasta away to reheat it and when she brought it back told me that the soup was on low and should of been on high. Maybe she should of checked that before she started serving. Now I have my pasta back and just started to eat that and the lobster is served. Now I have to decide what to eat before the other gets cold or just eat faster. In the meantime i am getting dripped on from the rain storm outside. We were seated outside on the porch and they had the plastic covers rolled down but that didn't stop all the rain from getting in. Plus I had an electric heater behind me that I kept worring about. The lobster was good but not that filling. They advertise on the local TV that they have big portions, not true. We came away from that dinner very unstatisfied and will never go back!

Sorry you had a miserable time at Poor Boy's, especially out in the rain. We had just the opposite experience.

Yeah, Miguel's is right down the street from the Siam Orchid. Wasn't that the place that had all the beers on tap? ((b))
