Restaurant suggestions near theater district

My friend and I will be taking the train from PHL to see Anything Goes the end of February Wed. matinee. It is located 124 West 43 Street (between Broadway and 6th.) We will take a cab to the theater. We would be interested in more then likely early lunch before the play. What is there around there that anyone would suggest? We like good food, and would prefer not a chain as in Hardrock cafe etc. I was looking at the Glass Tavern? Menu sounds good. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank-you.

How about db Bistro Moderne, at 55W44 between Sixth and Fifth. (http://danielnyc.com/dbbistro.html) This is one of internationally-renowned chef Daniel Boulud's places, and the home of the famous db burger, expensive at $32, but stuffed with braised short ribs, truffles and foie gras.

If you join savored.com, you can pay $10 for a reservation, then get 30% off food and beverages. It's a great deal, just steps from the theater.

Enjoy Anything Goes.

I like Cafe Un Deux Trois which is only a block away at 123 w 44th st. They have a good prix fixe deal for lunch and dinner.

We love to go to Uncle Nick's because we don't have anything like it in Seattle: http://unclenicksgreekcuisine.com/

It's very authentic. Grilled octopus, and everything.

I like my friend Eddie's restaurant E & E grill house but it is a six block walk from the theatre and if you are already taking a cab from Penn Station, you probably don't want to walk that far.

We are walkers we walk 4 miles a day easy--but at the gym. cold and windy--ahh I dunno about that one. I am liking Christinas. Looks great to me. It might be a winner. I like the looks of it. We do greek food around here quite a bit. thanks for your thoughts.

Christina's:
Not in the Zagat Guide.
Gets decidedly mixed reviews on menupages.com.
I've never heard of it.

If you want good Italian, there are lots of more reputable places.

Plus, it's on Second between 33rd and 34th, some distance from the theater.

bspielman, I think diann24 meant the Fodorite Christina's recommendation of Cafe Un Deux Trois, not Christina's restaurant.

I like the West Bank Cafe at 407 W. 42nd Street.

Several Fodorites have eaten there in the last couple of months and really enjoyed it as well.

They offer a nice prix fixe menu as well as their other menu options.

Be sure to book a reservation on OpenTable.

Thanks, elllenem. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Un Deux Trois is pretty mediocre.

nytraveler Jan 30th, 2012 09:28 AM

Un Deux Trois has been a standby for about 35 years. the food is OK - but no more. They are close to the theater and will get youout in time.

If you give a budget and type of food people may have other suggestions.

If you can't get a reservation for the time you want on Open Table, call the restaurant directly. Open Table has times set aside that may be different than what the restaurant has available.

For the West Bank Cafe above, clicking on the "Reserve Now" link on their website takes you directly to the OpenTable site with the West Bank Cafe info pre-loaded.

Ellenmen thanks for bringing clarity to my comment about Christines recommendation http://cafeundeuxtrois.biz/ Yes that is what I was referring to. Prices are fine at that one or the West Bank Cafe. I eat a lot of Italian food so an ethnic type restaurant is not what I am seeking or I would have stated so. A varied Menu works fine as in the WEst Bank Cafe. That seems also to fit the bill. We can walk there without a problem? I was in New York City just 2 weeks ago for a show at the Cravitz center(??) or Javitz? I ate at West Side Steak house. That was a bit pricy but it was very good. Then walked up to Times Square but took the Taxi back. thanks all you have been so helpful!! I appreciate your feedback.

Both Osteria del Doge and Lamb's Club (also on 43rd, same as Cafe Un Deux Trois) are pretty good ... almost across the street from the other restaurant.

Lamb's, however, is more expensive and upscale and has a $49 lunch prix-fixe, but that's probably considerably more than you want to spend.

If you want something simple, then HB Burger is really not that bad (though not as good as Shake Shack or Five Napkin Burger), nor is Heartland Brewery, but both are practically across the street from the theater. Just keep it simple, but if you like beer, this could be a better choice.

diann, the WBC is less than 3 blocks away

Yes. However, if after clicking on the "Reserve Now" link and after being redirected to the OpenTable site you find there are no tables for your preferred time, call the restaurant directly.

I just made a reservation for the West Bank Cafe for lunch. They don't open till 11:45. I think it was wise to make a reservation. 3 blocks is fine to walk. I appreciate all your help. You come to Philly I will help you all. (smile!) The flower show is coming soon!

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Be sure to post back to let us know.

Jealous that you are getting to see Anything Goes. I'd love to see Sutton Foster in the show. Enjoy!

Friends made reservations for all of us at Un Deux Trois and I agree that it's mediocre. The main problem is that you have to eat so early if you're dining before a show so a casual place is best for us, something light.
