Restaurant Recommendations close to the Barnes Museum, near Phila, PA

I'm taking my two girlfriends to the Barnes Museum next Saturday for their birthdays. We have noon reservations for the Museum, but would like to eat lunch somewhere close by before our visit. We'll be arriving from the NE Extension of the turnpike, to I-476, to 76, to City Avenue.

We're looking for a light lunch - soup, sandwiches, salads. I like diners/pubs/cafes, and prefer to stay away from the chain restaurants.

Any suggestions?

Hey Robyn-

I don't have any personal suggestions, but a not-too-old thread on Chowhound has some ideas:
http://www.chowhound.com/topics/453647

I really enjoyed my visit to Barnes a couple of years ago. FYI, they have excellent docent-guided tours (free) but with limited space. Looks like they have tours at 1 and 2pm on Saturdays. If you're interested in the tour, you need to sign up for it as soon as you get in at noon. You'll be given a sticker to put on your shirt. The docents are very strict ~ they shoo off other visitors from the tour if they don't have the sticker.

Enjoy your visit!

Hi yk -

Thanks for the link to chowhound. We now have a couple of options for lunch that we can pick from.

B.J. and I visited the Barnes Museum several years ago and were absolutely blown away. When I heard they are planning to move the art work from Barnes' home into a larger museum facility, I decided I had to take my friends to see the collection the way Barnes intended it to be viewed, while they still had the opportunity. It's certainly awe inspriring seeing 23 Renoirs hanging on one living room wall!!!

With our tickets reserved for noon, I'm hoping we can catch the 1:00 tour.

Then afterwards we're driving to Peddler's Village to spend the rest of the day shopping. It should be a great day, if the weather cooperates.

You could try Murray's or Hymie's right on Montgomery Avenue near the Barnes. They're Jewish delis.

Don't forget to enjoy the gardens at Barnes. When we were there, we spent so much time inside (w/the guided tour and then we rented audioguide afterwards to see the whole collection again) we had no time left for the garden.

Thank you for your replies.

Pugsly - Hymie's and Murray's also came recommended on Chowhound. I'm leaning towards Hymie's. www.hymies.com Do you know... is there parking available in a lot, or do I need to find street parking?

yk - Last time I was at the Barnes was in March, and there wasn't much to look at in the garden. So I'm looking forward to seeing it again, this time in May.

Thanks for the additional info, schmerl. I didn't realize there was more shopping across the street.

There's usually plenty of street parking for Hymies or Murrays but I also think there's a parking lot behind them.
