Restaurant recommendations

Hello all!

I'm looking for recommendations for a restaurant around 42nd and 2nd street for lunch. My FI will be there tomorrow on an interview and has to find a place to eat and to hold the interview. Any suggestions? I don't think it has to be anything too fancy, just somewhere well known preferably and with a not-too-busy atmosphere so they can hear each other talk. TIA!

Palm and Palm Too are very close by and have fine steak and other "American" dishes in a steakhouse atmosphere. Both places are on Second between 44th and 45th Streets. For great food in quieter surroundings, walk one block east to L'Impero on Tudor City Place and 42/43nd Streets; this is one block east of Second Avenue.

Just so you know: English is Italian has gotten panned in the press here. It is part of a mini-chain here in the city and is reportedly loud, overblown, with not-very-good food. I would NOT recommend that you go there!

You can also check menupages.com for that area, and read reviews.

I rarely eat in that arae, but I have eaten at Palm, and it's excellent.

scrunch person, your last comment is just untrue. It may be getting mixed reviews, but there are enough people who like it for it to get a 20 in the Zagat guide for food, and a 9 out of 10 on citysearch.

As I said, English is Italian has gotten panned in the press. It may have decent rating on citysearch (not the most reliable indicator of good food) and Zagat, neither of which I place in the category of "press." But if you are interested enough, take a look at the NY TImes review, to mention but one example. It is a Jeffrey Chodorow place and to me, that does not mean great food but rather emphasis on the "scene," particularly at night. There was a tv series about the place which chronicled all the problems the owners and Todd English were having; that did little to inspire my confidence. I realize that is my own predjudice and that English is Italian might appeal to some people but with the huge portions and overall atmosphere I do not think it fits the bill for a quiet place in which to hold a job interview.
